Hourly Rate:                   $19.00 (Undergraduate), $21.00 (Graduate)
 
All internship positions are onsite and require regular, in-person attendance at the designated work location.
 
 
OVERVIEW OF DEPARTMENT:
The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Office of The Fire Marshal (OFM) is responsible for ensuring the safety of LIRR customers, employees, and vendors and to reduce or eliminate operational impact, property damage and economic loss due to fire or related hazards. These goals are achieved through enforcement of the NYS Fire Code on all LIRR properties and projects in compliance with 19 NYCRR Part 1204; Delivering education and hands on training related to fire safety and rail road safety for LIRR employees and local police / fire / EMS first responders; responding on a 24/7 basis to all LIRR related emergencies acting as a liaison between LIRR and external emergency response agencies; and conducting investigations to the origin and cause of all fires occurring on LIRR property. Additionally, OFM plans and facilitates an annual full scale multi-agency exercise with the fire service simulating a rail incident and practicing interagency communication, coordination, and safe evacuation of passengers from rail equipment. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • 1. Assist with regular life safety inspections of all LIRR owned and leased buildings and facilities.
  • Follow inspection procedures, accurately document findings, update building pre-plan information, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist in reviewing plans for fire safety, evacuation or any event requiring emergency plans.
  • Test those plans by assisting in performing fire drills and other training exercises.
  • Complete documentation of inspections, corrective actions, and incidents.
  • Respond to inquiries and prepare reports of activities and inspection findings.
  • Update building pre-plan information.
  • Other assignments at the request of management.
 
PROJECTS:
The Fire Marshal intern will support the following projects:
  • Implementation of fire safety and prevention programs by assisting with fire safety inspections.
  • Updating of building pre-plan data, assisting with hot work permit inspections. 
  • Assisting with fire and evacuation drills.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a must.
  • The candidate should possess organizational, analytical and communication skills. 
  • The candidate should be able to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and be able to work independently while being an active team player.
 
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
  • Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least 2.5 GPA OR matriculated in a graduate program in good standing with at least 2.8 GPA
  • Major(s) Preferred:  Fire Science, Emergency Management, Engineering, or related field.
