Summary:

This represented position is accountable for the distribution, pick-up, and sorting of incoming and outgoing mail, including logging of mail, arranging for express pick-up, and such items as certified mail and related mail components. The position also performs duties such as mail cart sorting and arrangement, copy machine operation, and some delivery of mail to other MTA locations. The incumbent(s) may also assist in the delivery of supplies.

Responsibilities:

  • Position distributes, picks up, delivers, sorts, and organizes mail, including all related mail functions such as postage, mail logging, overnight express, and other related mail items. This includes such items as advising on postage or mail options and costing, as well as the advisability of using various mail forms. Position also strives to meet internal customer needs by the prompt attention to mail problems, and advises internal customers of any upcoming or special delivery items they should be made aware of (i.e., no Saturday delivery for Federal Express).
  • Position organizes mail cart for smooth and effective delivery of mail.
  • Position may operate a copy machine or related office equipment, such as sorting and binding machines, postage meters, and similar equipment. The position will also advise the supervisor on workload issues so that the supervisor is aware of any pending backlogs or special "rush" orders.
  • Position may pick up and deliver mail items at other MTA locations.
  • Position may aid in the distribution of office supplies. This includes advising the supervisor of the supply situations, such as low levels of certain items, out of stock, or a surplus.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Incumbents must be able to lift boxes of up to 40 lbs, and will be working in "mail room" conditions, which may include some dust, shredded paper, and similar items normally associated with mailroom operations. 
  • Incumbent should be able to work under pressure situations, such as "rush" jobs, and be sensitive to the needs of the internal MTA customers as far as mall pick-up and delivery.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School education. 
  • Must be able to read and write English.
  • Must be able to organize mail for proper delivery and pick-up.
  • Must be able to become familiar with departments and individual departments. mail pick-up and delivery needs.

Other Information

May need to work outside of normal work hours (i.e., evenings and weekends)

Travel may be required to other MTA locations or other external sites.
