The Occupational Health Services (OHS) unit is recognized as one of the leading occupational health departments in the country. OHS ensures compliance with federal, state, and city safety regulations, and maintains internal controls that protect both employees and customers. This work is essential failure to comply with and can result in injuries or fatalities.
We are seeking a Staff Physician – Occupational Medicine to join our team of physicians and nurses dedicated to ensuring that MTA employees and pre‑employment candidates meet all medical requirements for their job titles. This role is critical to the safe and effective operation of the NYC Transit Authority.
Compensation 
  • Salary Range: $177,117 – $188,343 
  • Staff Physician Entrance Rate: $177,117 (Certification required within 1 year of hire date) 
  • Staff Physician, Level II: $187,117 (US DOT CDL Medical Examiner Certification required) 
Responsibilities 
Staff Physician
The Staff Physician will perform general occupational health evaluations within a Medical Assessment Center (MAC). Responsibilities include:
  • Conducting medical histories and physical examinations for pre‑employment fitness. 
  • Reviewing employees’ fitness‑for‑duty under NYC Transit Medical Standards, FTA, OSHA, and NYS DMV Article 19‑A regulations.
  • Arranging follow‑up evaluations and making appropriate medical dispositions.
  • Participating in health screening programs (e.g., sleep apnea, asbestos).
  • Documenting all evaluations in the central electronic medical application.
  • Working at various OHS medical facilities based on daily operational needs.
Certification Requirement: Newly hired Staff Physicians who are not US DOT CDL‑certified medical examiners must obtain certification within one (1) year of hire, as required by the collective bargaining agreement.
Additional Responsibilities for US DOT Certified Medical Examiners
In addition to the responsibilities above, Staff Physicians who are US DOT Certified Medical Examiners and registered with FMCSA’s National Registry will: 
  • Perform evaluations required under US DOT FCDL regulations.
  • Enter required information into the DOT national database. 
 
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited medical school. 
  • Completion of at least one year of residency and/or clinical equivalent. 
  • Current, valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York. 
 
Desired Skills
  • Board certification or eligibility in internal medicine or a primary care specialty. 
  • Prior occupational medicine experience. 
  • Strong clinical decision‑making skills. 
  • Detail‑oriented and organized. 
  • Effective team player. 
  • Ability to adhere to organizational, local, state, and federal guidelines. 
  • Computer literacy 
 
Selection Method
