Position Title: Operations Support, Emerging Talent Intern
Hourly Rate: $19.00 (Undergraduate)
All internship positions are onsite and require regular, in-person attendance at the designated work location.
OVERVIEW OF DEPARTMENT:
The Senior Vice President (SVP)- Operations oversees the day-to-day running of the Long Island Rail Road, including the Transportation, Stations, Maintenance of Equipment, and Service Planning departments. The SVP’s office develops both short- and long-term initiatives to measure and improve operational performance, efficiency, and service quality. We work with analytical and strategic groups across the agency to collect and analyze train movement, schedule, and customer data and interpret those results in the operational context.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Entering signal, track, schedule, and/or equipment characteristic data into simulation software.
- Reviewing engineering diagrams to identify changes that may affect model performance.
- Extracting and analyzing data using SQL, Excel, or scripting languages.
- Preparing summarized datasets based on large data analyses.
- Conducting field observations to identify root causes of unusual patterns in dwell time.
- Running simulations of existing service and comparing output with real-world conditions.
- Collaborating with staff to identify and weigh all implications of potential service adjustments.
- Responding to ad hoc data requests from team members as needed.
PROJECTS:
- RTC model development: input of track, signal, and other physical characteristic data into the model and reviewing its results.
- Data analysis: analyze train performance and ridership data to understand field conditions and identify challenges.
- Schedule review: considering model results, field conditions, and customer needs, assist in identifying opportunities for improvements and summarizing costs/benefits for leadership.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a must.
- The candidate should possess organizational, analytical and communication skills.
- The candidate should be able to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively.
- The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and be able to work independently while being an active team player.
- SQL and Excel experience required.
- Basic Python/Pandas knowledge a plus.
- Specific interest in rail planning/scheduling/operations highly desirable.
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
- Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least 2.5 GPA.
- Major(s) Preferred: Transportation engineering/planning, railway engineering, operations research, data analytics/data science, or related field.
