This position is eligible for teleworking, which is currently one day per week. New hires are eligible to apply 30 days after their effective hire date.

Position Objective:

This position is responsible for ensuring the accurate accounting and financial reporting of Capital Assets and Inventory. The incumbent will be responsible for assessing project completions, reviewing and analyzing accounting transactions, preparing and reviewing accounting entries, and assisting with the preparation of audited financial statements and disclosures.  The focus of this work will be for all MTA Agencies. This position will coach and supervise staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all activities related to the proper accounting and financial reporting of MTA Agencies' Fixed Assets and Inventory.
  • Manage the analysis and recording of monthly Fixed Assets and Inventory Transactions for MTA Agencies.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and prepares journal entries for the MTA Agencies' Inventory accounting activity, including the inventory reserves.
  • Review project status reports and documentation to assess and ensure proper Fixed Assets accounting treatment and capitalization. Manage the preparation of annual templates and reports for MTA Agencies Fixed Assets and Inventory.
  • Manage the preparation and review of account analysis, quarterly roll-forward, and disclosure reports.
  • Discipline/termination of employees when necessary. Review the performance of staff. Create a professional environment that respects individual differences and enables all employees to develop and contribute to their full potential.
  • Select, develop, and motivate personnel within the department. Provide career development for subordinates. Provide prompt and effective coaching and counseling.
  • Provide information as needed for internal and external audits.

 

Required Qualifications:

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated supervisory and/or leadership abilities
  • Must have knowledge of the general ledger system.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with all internal levels within a given organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact well with external agencies. External agencies may include the Governor’s Office for New York State and the New York City government.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high-profile, high-pressure environment effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with key internal and/or external stakeholders.
  • Must have strong managerial skills to effectively direct a staff of professional and technical employees in implementing the short- and long-term goals and direction for the area of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete short- and long-term projects effectively and as efficiently as possible.
  • Demonstrated analytical capabilities and quantitative skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or comparable applications, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) in Accounting and/or finance or business-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from an accredited college, may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum 7 years of accounting experience

The Following is/are preferred:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Prior experience working in a large, multi-faceted, fast-paced organization or governmental body.
  • Public Accounting or related experience
  • Experience working with contracts and purchase orders (financial compliance)
  • Experience in PeopleSoft or similar ERP system and lease accounting software
  • Familiarity with the MTA’s policies and procedures
  • Familiarity with the MTA’s collective bargaining procedures.
