Chartered in 1834, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the largest, busiest, and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the United States. In 2024, this 24/7/365 operation served 75.5 million riders on a system that stretches nearly 120 miles – from Penn Station and Grand Central Madison in Manhattan to Montauk on the eastern tip of Long Island.
 
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible to service, trouble shoot, and repair all LIRR equipment, machinery, heavy equipment, and trucks as directed.  All service and repairs shall be in compliance with all Standard Automotive Equipment (SAE), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards and performed in a safe clean and professional manner.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Service, troubleshoot, and repair all LIRR on/off rail track equipment, trucks, and cranes, including wayside lubricators, generators, Tower lights.
  • Service, troubleshoot, and repair all components of diesel engines and heavy equipment.
  • Service and repair equipment's hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, electronic, pneumatic and HVAC systems.
  • Perform all service and repairs in shop and field conditions including all inclement weather.
  • Perform work in safe and professional manner.
  • Complete and submit service tickets/labor reports.
  • Attend company-training classes.
  • Perform all house cleaning associated with service/repair.
  • Inform supervision of work progress and safety issues.
 
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED) approved by a State's Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
  • Eight years of mechanical experience in servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing of automobiles or construction equipment.
  • Certificate from technical trade school with emphasis on diesel engines and heavy equipment repair.
  • Must possess a strong knowledge of diesel and gas engine repair, overhaul and troubleshooting.
  • Must possess a strong knowledge of: 12/24 volt starting/charging systems, cooling systems, small engine repair (two/four cycle),  transmission repair (standard and automatic), differential repair/overhaul, transfer case repair/overhaul, heavy-duty front end and suspension repairs,  and automotive heating and air-conditioning repairs.
  • Must be able to read and interpret hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical prints.
  • Must possess knowledge of air/hydraulic brake system troubleshooting, repair and overhaul.
  • Must possess full set of mechanics tools.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems including pumps, drive motors, and cylinders.
  • Strong knowledge of construction equipment repairs (pay loaders, backhoes, vacuum trucks, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge of computer/engine interface.

  • Actual salary offers may vary based on individual work experience. The annual salary range is subject to change and may be modified at the company’s discretion.
  • Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MTA drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.

  • LIRR: In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written, and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record.
