JOB TITLE:                    Deputy Inspector

DEPT/DIV:                    MTA Police Department

SALARY:                        $199,861.00*

SUPERVISOR:               Inspector or Deputy Chief

LOCATION:                   Various (locations within the MTA service area)

HOURS OF WORK:      10-hour shifts, 4 days per week with 3 consecutive rest days

Summary:

The MTA Police Department is seeking qualified members interested in consideration for promotion to Deputy Inspector. Candidates should demonstrate strong leadership capabilities, administrative competence, and the ability to direct the full range of police operations.

Responsibilities:

Deputy Inspectors are responsible for the supervision, direction, and effective performance of police operations within their assigned command.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing leadership and oversight to subordinate members across all branches of the Department.
  • Preparing reports, investigations, and operational summaries on police matters and conditions.
  • Executing all duties prescribed by law, policy, and departmental directives.
  • Managing administrative functions within assigned offices or commands.
  • Ensuring staff are fully trained and knowledgeable on all relevant laws and amendments applicable to their geographic district or service area.
  • Allocating, reviewing, and supervising administrative work as required.
  • Coordinating, preparing, and when appropriate, conducting departmental training sessions.
  • Interpreting and explaining laws, regulations, ordinances, and departmental policies to staff.
  • Developing crime-reduction strategies tailored to the needs of the assigned district or service environment.
  • Building strong working relationships with other law enforcement partners and MTA operational agencies for coordinated responses, including during critical incidents.
  • Maintaining effective relationships with community leaders to support trust, transparency, and collaboration.
  • Ensuring that directives and policies from the Chief of Police are clearly communicated and followed.
  • Keeping supervisors fully informed of operational matters that may impact the Department.
  • Promoting and upholding the Department's vision, mission, and core values in all daily operations.

Qualifications:

To be considered, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in law enforcement or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Ten (10) years of law enforcement experience, including at least two (2) years at the command level of a police operation at the time of application.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of police administration principles, court decisions, and their application to police operations.
  • Working knowledge of MTA and its subagency’s operating procedures.
  • Basic proficiency with police computer systems.
  • Knowledge of NYS and CT Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law, Family Court Act, Railroad Law, and applicable local ordinances.
  • Successfully complete a panel interview.
  • Complete a "Candidate Application" (Form #69) and forward it to his or her immediate supervisor, who shall complete the applicable sections and then forward the form through the chain of command.

Eligible employees who meet the above minimum qualifications will be further assessed on their individual qualifications as they relate to the needs of the Department at the time.


Meeting minimum qualifications does not guarantee assignment to the rank of Deputy Inspector.
