Candidates can be considered for either the Car Appearance Maintainer or Oiler position.
The Car Appearance Maintainer is responsible for maintaining the interior cleanliness of passenger cars.  Duties include the removal and proper disposal of garbage from the cars, all aspects of cleaning the car interior, such as sweeping and mopping, cleaning the toilet compartments, restocking toilet compartment supplies, and cleaning the Engineer's cab, including the interior and exterior of the Engineer's windshield.

The Oiler services and cleans locomotives, transports supplies and materials, and performs a variety of support and clean-up activities in locomotive car repair yards and shop areas.  Performs general cleaning of all shops, including maintenance work areas.
Responsibilities of the Car Appearance Maintainer may include, but are not limited to: 
  •  De-icing and watering all types of train cars.
  •  Cleaning the interior and exterior of passenger train cars.
  •  Perform all sweeping, dusting, mopping, scraping, stripping, and shampooing, cleaning of seats, hardware, toilets, and toilet compartments.
  •  Provide paper and soap supplies where needed on passengers, bar, and parlor train cars.
 
Responsibilities of the Oiler position may include, but are not limited to: 
  •  Clean locomotive engineers (interior and exterior).
  •  Transport supplies and materials between the work area and storage site.
  •  Perform variety of support and clean-up activities in locomotive car repair yards and shop areas.
  •  Sand and fuel locomotives.
  •  Must be able to work alone and unsupervised in various yards that are adequately lit.
 
Qualifications 
  •  A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State's Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
  •  Basic oral and written communication skills.
  •  Knowledge of hand tools and equipment.
  
Additional qualification of Oiler:
One to two years of basic mechanical or electrical-related work experience.

Preferred/Desirable Skills/Qualifications for Car Appearance Maintainer:
  •  Prior related maintenance experience.
  •  Prior mechanical experience or aptitude (i.e., ability to accurately compute shop mathematics and measure surfaces using various measuring instruments and working knowledge of hand and/or power tool operations).
****In addition, in accordance with CFR219, new hires will be required to learn the requirements of Right of Way Protection (RWP) as well as perform the tasks within the West Side Yard Facility within 30 days of employment. ****

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written, and/ or practical evaluation) and interview.
