Job Title:            Request for Consideration Lieutenant, Highway and Bridge Safety Unit

Summary:

The MTA Police Department is seeking qualified members of the department who are interested in being assigned to the Highway & Bridge Safety Unit as a Lieutenant. 

 

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of a Highway and Bridge Safety Unit Lieutenant includes but is not limited to:

  • Oversee Sergeants, Officers, and support staff assigned to the Highway & Bridge Safety Unit.
  • Coordinate and direct traffic enforcement operations on MTA Bridges and Tunnels, Railroad Crossings and other locations as directed by the Commanding Officer of the Special Operations Division.
  • Coordinate escorts for funeral processions, oversized equipment, and other events requiring the safe delivery of assets.
  • Monitor overtime, staffing, grant funds, and resource allocation to maintain effective coverage.
  • Utilize statistics to enhance the efficient and expeditious flow of traffic for commuters utilizing the various transportation systems of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, including Metro-North Railroad, Long Island Railroad and MTA Bridges and Tunnels.
  • Represent the department at meetings, public forums, and media events concerning highway safety.
  • Respond to public complaints and inquiries related to highway patrol operations.
  • Maintain accountability for equipment, vehicles, and records used by the highway unit.
  • Schedule and oversee training for new members of the Highway Unit.
  • Conduct and formulate material for monthly in-service training.
  • Oversee and coordinate joint operation details with partner law enforcement agencies to include DWI Enforcement details; Commercial Vehicle Enforcement details; and more.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Commanding Officer of Special Operations Division.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Qualifications:

Interested members must, at a minimum, possess the following qualifications/requirements to be considered for this position:

  • Currently hold the rank of Lieutenant or the position of Highway Sergeant and currently on the Lieutenant promotional list within the MTA Police Department.
  • Must have had previous experience working in the Highway & Bridge Safety Unit.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with the department’s Traffic and Criminal Software (TraCS)
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with the department’s Motorola License Plate Reader Software.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with NYS e-Justice Integrated Justice Portal.
  • Ability to access & utilize databases from the state and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Possess professional appearance and must conform to the uniform regulations of the Highway Unit.
  • Possess the willingness to participate in all training assignments related to the mission of the Highway Unit
  • NYDCJS General Topics Instructor Certification preferred but not required.
  • Be willing to commit to three (3) years of service with the Highway Unit.
  • Certified Police Motorcycle Operator preferred but not required.
  • Mobile Command Vehicle Operator preferred but not required.
  • Experience managing Highway and Bridge Safety Unit grants preferred.
  • Experience as a DCJS Certified Field Training Officer and experience managing Highway Unit Field Training Officers preferred.
