Lead Structural Packaging Designer

Engineering Newark, California

Description

Position at Logitech

The Lead Structural Packaging Designer is a high-profile role covering both current and future packaging design.  This includes the form, materials, design for retail, and continuing into the execution phase of design intent. The role works closely with global packaging engineering locations, suppliers, proto shops/labs along with business groups and contacts within the company.  The candidate should be able to mentor junior employees in structural packaging design and have a compelling and diverse portfolio of past packaging project work.

Your Contribution:

Move fast.  Speak up. Decide and own.  Drive change. Exceed customer needs.  These are some of the winning behaviors you’ll need for success at Logitech. In this role, you will:

  • Craft the future packaging for Logitech

  • Understand and contribute to all phases of the design thinking process from conceptual to strategic, and tactical to implementation

  • Craft beautiful details, while keeping the bigger picture in mind, and vice versa

  • Provide team leadership with the ability to run projects with little support

  • Develop packaging dielines, as well as thermoform, molded pulp, and other molded material packaging for complex surfaced products

  • Create compelling presentations throughout development to cross-functional teams

  • Collaborate with and inspire Business and Product Leads – but also work with and push the limits of suppliers for new capabilities and so on for the best solutions

  • Work in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment while working closely with the rest of the packaging team (engineering, graphics, etc.) and the design department (project management, CMF, ID, etc.) both locally and internationally

  • Occasionally travel overnight nationally and internationally

  • Work towards our internal sustainability goals

Key Qualifications:

For consideration, you must bring the following minimum skills and behaviors to our team:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in structural packaging design

  • Well-versed in consumer-centered design methods and techniques

  • Strong portfolio of cutting edge retail packaging design that proves not only solid design skills but forward-thinking in consumer electronics or related industry

  • Experience defining Packaging Materials (paper, plastics, foam, etc.), manufacturing processes of them, properties, and relative cost basis – along with coatings and printing finishes

  • Excellent skills in ideation, concept visualization, form development, CAD, model making and rapid prototyping and building this into strategy level concepts

  • Excellent 2D and 3D skills: fluent in the Adobe Creative Suite, Solidworks or ProE/Creo, Artios CAD, and TOPS or CAPE

  • Highly driven and proactive self-starter - taking on a task without much context and driving it through

  • Believes in collaboration in a multi-disciplinary design environment – not a waterfall

  • Excellent communication and story-telling skills sharing your design thinking, presenting to all levels of co-workers and management throughout all stages of design

  • Advanced knowledge of ISTA and related shipping tests/freight environments

  • In-depth knowledge of sustainable packaging trends and practices

  • Experience with packaging suppliers and understanding how they work to design solutions

  • Past experience with consumer electronics, b2b, multiple SKUs, etc

  • Willingness to take direction and learn from others

  • Optimistic outlook - we are creating the future after all

Preferable skills and behaviors include:

  • Experience with complex surfacing in ProE/Creo or Solidworks

  • SE Asia and Chinese vendor experience

  • Experience in all parts of sustainable packaging from materials to guidelines, and using Compass LCA software

  • Preference for bay area candidates, but will relocate for the right person

Education:

Requires a BS in Packaging Design/Engineering/Industrial Design or a related degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience

Logitech is the sweet spot for people who are passionate about products, making a mark, and having fun doing it. As a company, we’re small and flexible enough for every person to take initiative and make things happen. But we’re big enough in our portfolio, and reach, for those actions to have a global impact. That’s a pretty sweet spot to be in and we’re always striving to keep it that way.
