Chartered in 1834, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the largest, busiest, and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the United States. In 2024, this 24/7/365 operation served 75.5 million riders on a system that stretches nearly 120 miles – from Penn Station and Grand Central Madison in Manhattan to Montauk on the eastern tip of Long Island.
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible to perform the daily activities required to successfully complete design tasks for railroad structures, including stations, bridges, retaining walls, and any other areas applicable to civil engineering discipline under the jurisdiction of the Managing Engineer – Civil Design. Perform field investigations, develop and prepare buildable design documents including civil/structural CAD drawings, and structural calculation. Incorporate safety, durability and resilience, maintainability, and economic objectives in each activity performed as a Designer of Structures for the purpose of providing a customer focused transportation system.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform all assigned design tasks as required to meet work objectives. Actively participate in design projects from inception and development of design criteria through design completion. Assist and represent the Engineer of Design and Senior Engineer of Design during design development through field investigations, coordination with field forces, and application of standard engineering practices. Contribute and assist in development of plans and specifications, by providing calculations, analysis, drafting evaluations of impact and recommendations. Participate during design and project meetings, representing the goals, objectives and interests of the LIRR and the Engineering Department.
- Actively participate in overtime assignments as required by the Department including emergency response, special programs, and fast track projects
- Supply input for development of the schedule and budget parameters that will govern the design work. Comply with the established schedule and budget. Complete all assigned tasks to ensure timely and accurate completion of projects. Demonstrate focus on development of tasks while utilizing project management skills.
- Perform timely Construction Phase Services leading to successful completion of work. Review shop-drawing and all other submittals; perform periodic field visits to confirm that work is being performed in accordance with design intent and requirements documents.
- Maintain and develop professional and technical knowledge, which may include preparation for the NYS Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination and/or the NY Intern Engineer Certification.
- Promote a diverse workforce. Maintain professional relationships.
- Perform other assignments as requested by Senior Management.
- Ensure a safe working environment and adherence to guidelines of company safety policies and procedures. Lead by example.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. An additional four years of demonstrated, directly related, equivalent experience and education may be considered in lieu of the degree.
- 2 years of experience in Design development working on civil/structural design projects, including preparation of civil/structural CAD drawings, structural calculations, specifications, and other design documents.
- Relevant experience working with engineering consultants, contractors, and/or State/City Agencies.
- Proficiency in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent design and/or construction field of Engineering.
- Solid knowledge of engineering principles and practices as applied to civil and structural engineering.
- Effective oral and written communication skills including ability to work with a team of diverse stakeholders.
- Effective organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills.
- Strong computer skills, including use of structural analysis software and AutoCAD drafting.
- Ability to work independently and lead tasks to completion
- Must possess a valid drivers license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of railway engineering including knowledge of LIRR and Engineering Department operations, work practices, and its policies and procedures.
- Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) and/or NY Intern Engineer certification.

OTHER INFORMATION:
- Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MTA drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
- LIRR: In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written, and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make-up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of the last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance. Not all qualified applicants are guaranteed an interview due to the competitive selection process. A medical examination and safety-sensitive drug/alcohol test may also be required.
