JOB SUMMARY:
This position assists Transportation Supervision in providing safe, efficient and economical operation of trains within an assigned area(s). Direct crews to ensure dependable, comfortable and courteous service to our customers. Assist in restoring service during incidents of disruption.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Respond to service disruptions and/or emergencies on a 24/7 basis as required with responsibility to make decisions regarding contingent operating plans as incidents/situations occur. Decisions may include cancelling and/or combining trains, ordering emergency buses, and coordinating alternate means of transportation for passengers.
- Assume the role of primary authority during operations incidents with complete autonomy and authority to direct the investigation and orchestrate recovery which can include the ordering of emergency buses, relieving crew members and covering assignments.
- Conduct face-to-face employee observations (SAFER) per the Code of Federal Regulations evaluating compliance with operational and safety rules.
- Manage transportation operations (i.e. train performance), to meet and exceed operational goals and service objectives.
- Manage train and engine service employees in accordance with operational procedures and safety performance standards.
- Contribute to the management of facility standards regarding safety and security.
- Ride trains and evaluate crews for adherence to safety, operational and job performance requirements.
- Instruct employees on safe operation procedures.
- Take charge at scene of disruption or unusual occurrence, evaluate situations and take authorized appropriate action.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State's Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an operating department, or other demonstrated equivalent qualifications may be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of LIRR Operational Rules and Transportation Procedures.
- Qualification on rules and physical characteristics within one year of appointment.
- Ability to demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to manage and deal with employees effectively.

OTHER INFORMATION:
- Pursuant to the New York State Public Officers Law & the MTA Code of Ethics, all employees who hold a policymaking position must file an Annual Statement of Financial Disclosure (FDS) with the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (the “Commission”).
- Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MTA drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.

- LIRR:
- In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e., physical, written, and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make-up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record. A record of more than ten sick days without medical documentation in two of the last three years is considered unsatisfactory attendance. Not all qualified applicants are guaranteed an interview due to the competitive selection process. A medical examination and safety-sensitive drug/alcohol test may also be required.
