What You Will Do:
The Communications Officer, Emergency Department, receives communication on all incoming patient emergencies and transfers, determines the appropriate destination for the patient, and notifies the appropriate hospital personnel so that patient care can be delivered.
Responsibilities and Duties
Receives incoming communication from outside of Winchester Medical Center regarding emergencies, direct admits, and possible transfers into the Emergency Department and/or hospital. Obtains mechanism of injury, airway status, GCS, brief summary of injury, and estimated time of arrival from pre-hospital care providers. Determines the appropriate ED destination for the incoming patient based on the reported patient assessment. Notifies the M.D., Charge RN, Triage Nurse, and other Emergency Department and/or hospital personnel of all incoming patients. Uses trauma center criteria to alert the trauma team. Activates the appropriate Codes response ensuring communication the appropriate hospital personnel. Provides room assignments by utilizing the Emergency Department bed tracking tool to identify available beds, collaborating with the ED triage and/or Charge Nurse as necessary. Responsible for monitoring access to the Communication Center. Ensures accurate documentation of exchange of drug boxes and notifies the Charge Nurse of the need to verify narcotic counts for EMS drug boxes. Documents patient information according to the Communications Operator documentation standards. Scan and email EMS reports to HIM on all EMS arrivals.
Minimum three years of EMT (paid or volunteer), or hospital emergency department experience, or active or retired LPN/RN preferred.
Minimum two years of radio communication experience preferred.
Certification & Licensures
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) - AHA approved required*
ACLS Certification (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred
* New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
Knowledge of pre-hospital care including protocols required.
Knowledge of communication equipment and prior use preferred.
