Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
The Counselor(s) are appointed by the Principal and responsible to the Director of Academic Counselor and Vice Principal to ensure the proper academic programming and care for students’ academic programming and sequencing of class schedules.
- Specific duties include but are not limited to: Administrative Duties
- 1. Assists the Vice Principal to ensure that all curricular standards meet national and state college and university requirements through the updating of course codes and data submitted to the College Board and UC/Cal-State System.
- 2. Assists the Vice Principal to supervise the development, maintenance and evaluation of all site-level educational programs including but not limited to 7th period programming, tutorial and remediation programming.
- 3. Assists the Vice Principal to ensure that individual student academic course study is available through STEP/MAP and/or for special circumstances (i.e. home study, night school, etc.).
- 4. Assists the Principal in the annual development of the master schedule of courses, faculty and student assignments.
- 5. Assists the Vice Principal and the Director of Academic Counselor to review, compile, interpret and maintain testing STAR Assessment, AP Exams and Final Assessment data for programming requirements including but not limited to general student surveys and census reports to individual student evaluations and interventions.
- 6. Assists the Vice Principal to develop and maintain student academic eligibility list for distribution to administration and faculty to direct student academic interventions.
- 7. Assist with the STAR Assessment, AP Exams and Final Assessments as directed by the Vice Principal and the Director of Academic Counselor.
- 8. Perform other duties which may be assigned by the Vice Principal and/or Principal.
Counseling Duties
1. Create an extensive rapport with families that are served through the counseling department. Schedules and facilitates parent-teacher conferences and back-to-school events.
2. Assume all case management roles on behalf of students when required and provide continuous and proper monitoring and maintenance of academic history, including test results, report cards, progress reports, and other pertinent data.
3. Authorizes and enters schedule changes when deemed appropriate.
4. Provide educational and social histories to faculty members of referrals and maintain contact with instructors to ensure sound instructional practices for those students.
5. Publish relevant information to colleagues, parents and students on academic progress under caseload management.
6. Demonstrate the ability to establish effective intervention strategies and techniques with students to self-monitor and report.
7. Recognize the indication for, and implement procedures for evaluation, consultation and counseling for students experiencing a need for special services.
- 8. Knowledgeable in the uses of resources and aid of specialists in and outside of the school system to better prepare and implement academic modification and adjustments for students.
- 9. Hold one-on-one meetings with each student at least twice a year.
- Supervision
- 1. Assists the Dean of students in the overall discipline of the school.
- 2. Assists in the yard and hall supervision during breaks and lunch.
- 3. Assists in the supervision of after-school events and meetings.
- Masters Degree in School Counseling or related field required
- Experience working with students 4th - 8th grade desired
- Meet with students and help with pressures and anxieties that students are feeling
- Masters Degree in School Counseling or related field required, PPS in School Counseling preferred but not required
- Prior experience working with high school aged students
- Prior experience as an academic counselor (college/career awareness in particular)
Additional Information:
- Starting hourly rate for 0-2 years of experience - $50/hour
- Sign-on Bonus, half to be paid at 90 days and remainder to be paid at the conclusion of assignment or June (whichever is earlier)
