JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for performing physical inspections of Metro-North’s stations and facilities to identify items and conditions that require repair or maintenance to keep Metro-North Railroad stations and facilities of good repair and to ensure the safety of Metro-North Railroad customers and employees.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct daily in-person physical inspections of all (MNR) Stations and Facilities on a rotating 35-day cycle. Identify and document defects or deficiencies through detailed electronic and paper reports, including photographic evidence, to ensure safety, functionality, and compliance with operational standards.
  • Conduct comprehensive annual in-person inspections of all required stations to assess safety, functionality, and compliance with operational and regulatory standards. Prepare detailed reports, rating each asset in accordance with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) five-point scale: 5 – Excellent, 4 – Good, 3 – Adequate, 2 – Marginal, and 1 – Poor. All inspections are graded and documented per FTA guidelines to ensure consistency and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare and submit comprehensive reports and photographic documentation of daily inspections and findings. Maintain detailed and accurate records of all daily activities and inspection results.
  • Participate in daily meetings with managers to review identified safety concerns and discuss scheduled inspections to be performed, ensuring alignment and prompt corrective actions.
  • Immediately document and communicate any safety-critical findings at Stations and Facilities to management to ensure timely response and remediation.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Possess basic understanding of carpentry, masonry, sheet metal, electrical and plumbing systems, with the ability to recognize defects.
  • Basic knowledge of building construction methods and materials commonly found in railroad stations or similar structures.
  • Ability to take accurate measurements as needed to support inspections, assessments, and reporting.
  • Ability to work in diverse railroad environments, including rights-of-way, train platforms, stations, and other field locations and capable of performing duties in all weather conditions.  
  • Must be flexible to adapt to working varying shifts, including weekends and holidays as needed. 
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative, demonstrating strong self-motivation and minimal need for direct supervision.  
  • Must possess strong attention to detail, excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision. 
  • Knowledgeable of MS Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel) or comparable applications.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, tablets, and related software for data entry, reporting, and communication.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
 
 
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Associates Degree in Applied Science, Facilities Management, or related field.  Demonstrated equivalent experience, education and/or technical credentials may be considered in lieu of degree to include 2 additional years of related experience.
  • Minimum two (2) year experience in building maintenance, facility inspections, construction, or related field.
 
The following is/are preferred: 
  • Knowledge of Hexagon software.

  • Pursuant to the New York State Public Officers Law & the MTA Code of Ethics, all employees who hold a policymaking position must file an Annual Statement of Financial Disclosure (FDS) with the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (the “Commission”).
  • Actual salary offers may vary based on individual work experience. The annual salary range is subject to change and may be modified at the company’s discretion.
  • Employees driving company vehicles will be subject to License Monitoring and must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MTA drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
  • Current employee applicants should be in their current position 12 months prior to starting a new role and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record.
