ROLE OVERVIEW
We’re looking for a superstar Head of Audio Experience who can work with our teams to breathe life into brand new titles, improve existing ones, and take our entire audio experience across our portfolio of live games and slots to the next level. This is all in service of providing an even more immersive experience for the millions of players who enjoy our games every day.
If you think in sound, have a keen ear to be able to identify how our soundscapes need to develop, and are expertly able to communicate that vision to the people making, monitoring, and improving our games, you’ll fit right in.
Reporting to the Chief Product Officer and working closely with the game production teams, studio production teams, and sound teams, this is a hands-on role that can be on the ground with the team or based remotely.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Core Responsibilities;
Core Responsibilities;
- Build, grow, and lead a team of audio specialists that support the core responsibilities listed here.
- Assist product in building new games by advising on the musical score, UI sound effects, general sounds & sound effects, dealer voice, and soundscape. This may include detailed research, user feedback, and domain expertise to understand:
- How to make a gameshow’s soundscape immersive and fun
- How sound can contribute to making a purist blackjack, roulette, and baccarat experience. For example, understanding the profile and amplitude of how a roulette ball should sound when it is landing.
- Work directly with product owners to define, detail, and advise on what sounds and events should be used with a game. You will need to help communicate that vision to our sound team and help iterate during the sound design, engineering, and production process.
- Perform audio user acceptance testing from the perspective of the end user for all new games to ensure the soundscape is as per spec.
- Evaluate our back-catalogue of games and suggest ways we may improve the soundscape further.
- Within the same game, work with sound & studio production to ensure that it has the same sound level outputs and calibrations where:
- Game UI sounds are appropriately loud relative to other UI sounds.
- Music tracks work well and are appropriately loud to the game UI sound.
- Studio sounds all fit with one another and are appropriately loud relative to game UI and musical tracks.
- Dealers can be heard clearly and consistently throughout the game and that studio, music, and game UI sounds don’t overwhelm their voices.
- Game UI sounds, music, and studio sounds all fit with one another in a harmonious and consistent soundscape.
- Across our entire game portfolio, ensure audio has consistency throughout from a level, clarity, and style perspective. Whereas in the previous point the focus was on proper calibration within a game, this point is to focus on calibration techniques across the entire portfolio, which may include different environments and setups that can affect one another. In other words, players will move from game to game and we need to make sure that their audio experience is consistent across titles and that they won’t find it jarring from one game to the next. For example, we don’t want people reaching for the volume button when moving between games, like you get when you’re listening to different albums.
- Ensure our games sound amazing on all kinds of different devices such as mobiles, desktop setups, and laptops – exactly how you would expect our players to be enjoying our games.
- Ensure our games are at a reasonable level compared to other sounds from a user’s device on mobile or desktop, particularly when compared with popular services like YouTube or Netflix
- Research our competitors and benchmark how they compare to our sounds.
- Look at ways we can compose original scores and publish these on Spotify – the ideal is making the sounds in the game so good that people want to listen to them outside.
- Look at other entertainment and gaming verticals and see what they are doing to make truly immersive soundscapes.
- Watch streamers, speak with streamers, and get feedback on peoples’ audio experiences so that we can suggest improvements.
- Ensure our audio experience is fit for streamers and works well with their setups.
- Inspect our studios and audio engineering to understand how everything is calibrated and set up. Suggest ways this can be improved or further fine-tuned to provide the best possible results.
- Set up guidelines and monitoring processes for our operational teams to ensure that sounds are being delivered according to spec.
- Work with operations to set up systems and training guidelines that can help ensure consistent speaking levels from our team of talented dealers and presenters.
Strategic Responsibilities
- Work with our audio production teams to set guidelines and best practices to ensure consistency with the existing portfolio and any new titles they are working on.
- Keep an eye on broader design trends and tools, especially within the gaming and entertainment spaces, to ensure that we are keeping up with best audio practices and exceeding customer expectations.
- Look for specialist teams, equipment, and developments in the audio space that we may be able to use to provide an even better and more immersive sound experience.
- Evaluate how we rank against other entertainment sectors and competitors within our sector from an audio experience.
- Set KPIs for benchmarking in-game audio consistency & quality, across-game audio consistency & quality, and game group audio consistency & quality.
- Determine ways our soundscapes can stand out versus our competitors and give us an edge with our players.
- Investigate different audio marks and different unique touches that make our sounds immediately recognisable to players without seeing our games. Think: Netflix Tadum.
