Competitive Benefits. Meaningful Extras. Unmatched Value.
- A place where you can take your career in the direction you want to grow and go
The Opportunity:
Sunoco is seeking a skilled Data Engineer to join our Supply Optimization team with strong expertise in R and/or Python. This role is focused on designing and delivering scalable data and application solutions that enable data-driven decision-making and maximize enterprise margins. You will help enhance supply chain visibility, strengthen demand forecasting, optimize inventory management, and improve overall operational performance.
This role will play a critical part in the Value Chain Optimization (VCO) initiative aimed at transforming Sunoco’s Supply Chain operations. As a Data Engineer reporting to the Senior Manager - Optimization, you will work closely with supply chain managers, logistics teams, schedulers, and analysts and translate complex business requirements into intuitive, production-grade applications, dashboards, and data products that power real-time, actionable insights across the organization.
Responsibilities:
Data Engineering & Pipelines:
- Design and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest, transform, and serve supply chain data from ERP, ETRM, TMS, inventory, and external sources using modern architectures (e.g., medallion).
- Implement automated workflows, monitoring, and validation processes to ensure reliable, high-quality data.
Application Development & Optimization Enablement:
- Build and maintain end-to-end web applications, APIs, and data products that support inventory, margin, routing, and logistics optimization.
- Develop data structures for forecasting and planning models, productionize analytics solutions, and embed them into operational workflows.
- Create intuitive dashboards and user interfaces (e.g., Shiny, Dash, React) that deliver actionable insights to business users.
Data Quality, Governance & DevOps:
- Establish data quality standards, lineage tracking, and governance practices to ensure transparency, security, and compliance.
- Promote modular, well-documented code and implement testing, version control, and deployment best practices to deliver scalable, production-ready systems.
Stakeholder Collaboration:
- Partner with supply chain and operations teams to translate business challenges—such as stockout prevention, route optimization, and supply balancing—into high-impact technical solutions that drive measurable performance improvements.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or related field.
Requirements:
- 3-7+ years of experience in data engineering, application development or engineering roles.
- Strong proficiency in Python and/or R, with a focus on backend development, data processing, and automation (e.g., Flask, FastAPI).
- Experience implementing automated ETL pipelines using Python and/or R.
- Experience building end-to-end applications using either code-first data frameworks (e.g., Plotly Dash, R Shiny) or modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React).
- Experience with BI tools (e.g. Power BI) for reporting and dashboard integration.
- Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational databases.
- Understanding of RESTful APIs, microservices, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure).
- Experience with version control (Git) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Ability to work collaboratively with operations, supply chain, and commercial teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in oil and gas, fuel distribution, transportation, logistics, or supply chain optimization is considered an asset.
- Understanding of routing algorithms, optimization techniques, or real-time dispatching systems.
- Experience with Databricks or similar tools.
- Exposure to MLOps or deploying machine learning models into production environments
- Experience with using AI-assisted coding tools (e.g. Cursor) to accelerate coding workflows.
