The Opportunity:

Sunoco’s Marketing Specialist will play a key role on the Channel Execution team to support all foundational marketing activities, focusing on in-store signage for Retail Services (Food, Coffee, Carwash, Windshield Washer, etc.), product collateral, media, and budget management. This role is critical in driving sales and conversion at our sites by leading consumer touchpoints to achieve our corporate same-store sales goals. This role will also manage media planning and execution, as well as oversee budget tracking and reporting to ensure campaigns are delivered on time and within financial targets.

The Marketing Specialist will work to enhance the overall consumer journey and in-store communication tools, while bringing forward innovative ideas on how Sunoco can increase backcourt purchases. They will be responsible for executing the marketing signage plan and media that aligns organizational priorities, meets consumer expectations, and supports overall business objectives. Their focus will be to collaborate with their team and cross-functional departments, championing Operational Excellence, to determine what signage is required, what messaging resonates with consumers to drive specific behaviors, and lead all planning and execution.

Responsibilities:

Retail Services Signage
  • Develop Signage Plan & Guidelines: Create and maintain a comprehensive signage plan for Retail Services categories (Food, Coffee, Carwash, Windshield Washer, etc.). This includes designing templates and establishing store guidelines under the direction of the Channel Execution CA Manager & aligned with the Retail & Fuels Signage Lead.
  • Determine Signage Needs: Work with signage lead to identify the appropriate number, type, and placement of signs for each category to ensure effective messaging and customer engagement.
  • Maintain & Update Playbook: Regularly update the Retail Services signage guideline/playbook to reflect changes from operations, legal, government regulations, or other internal/external stakeholders.
  • Catalog Management: Ensure signage catalogs for Retail Services are accurate, up to date, and easy for store staff to navigate. Provide support for store signage requests as needed.
  • Promotional Signage Coordination: Ensure all Retail Services categories (Food, Coffee, Carwash, Windshield Washer, etc.) submit their promotional details on time in the promotional brief and deliver these briefs to the Retail & Fuels Signage Lead.
  • Program Integrations and Conversions : Oversee and coordinate the signage packages sent to sites rolling out new program or services launches (ex. Coffee, Food Service, etc.). Collaborate with our team and other key stakeholders to ensure program signage packages are updated when signage, program or communication updates are made to the current packages. 
Digital Media Responsibilities
  • Always-On Fuel Search & GasBuddy Media: Manage and optimize always-on paid search campaigns (e.g., “gas station near me”) and GasBuddy placements to drive traffic and brand visibility. Monitor performance metrics, adjust strategies for ROI, and ensure compliance with brand and legal standards.
  • ON/QC Beer Digital Media: Plan and execute digital advertising campaigns for beer promotions in Ontario and Quebec, ensuring adherence to provincial regulations. Coordinate creative development for display, social, and programmatic ads, and optimize campaigns based on engagement and conversion metrics.
  • Third Party Delivery:  Lead digital media strategy and coordination of media budgets across third party delivery partners (e.g., Uber Eats, DoorDash, SkipTheDishes) to drive conversion and order growth.  Collaborate with TPD team to optimize performance using platform analytics. Ensure brand consistency, compliance with partner guidelines, and alignment with broader retail media and omnichannel objectives. 
Other Duties:  
  • Retail Fleet Marketing - Retail Fleet Marketing Support: Develop and maintain marketing materials (sales collateral, presentations) to support fleet card acquisition and conversion. Manage updates to fleet websites for accurate product information and promotions. Coordinate consumer communications (email campaigns, newsletters) and collaborate with sales teams to provide tools that drive growth and retention.
  • Budget & POs: Track signage budget for Retail Services, promotions, and core signage, including store orders, replenishment and shipping. Ensure all invoices match contracted pricing.
  • Other duties as specified by the leadership on the Marketing and Customer Insights team.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Communications, Marketing, Advertising, or related discipline.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 8-10 years of experience in a marketing role in retail, advertising agency and/or similar industry.
  • Previous retail promotional experience is required. 
  • Ability to easily build and maintain relationships with stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, strong analytics & problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines.
  • Candidates that have a strong project management background are preferred
  • Strong competency with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Verbal and written fluency in French is preferred but not required.
