On-call Biological Field Technician

GEI Consultants is seeking multiple biological field technicians based out of our Sacramento office to implement project work such as: compliance monitoring, species and habitat evaluations, and species surveys. This position requires an introductory level of skill and experience, specifically in conducting biological clearance surveys, monitoring, and reporting. Projects will involve field labor, technical work, and/or monitoring of construction crews.
 
Essential Responsibilities & Duties 
  • Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with mitigation/regulatory requirements. 
  • Write and maintain daily monitoring and inspection logs.
  • Effectively and proactively communicate with construction crews, project personnel, and agency staff.
  • Conduct plant/wildlife/habitat reconnaissance-level field surveys, conduct biological literature research, map biological resources, implement compliance with environmental regulations, and conduct report writing.
  • Conduct habitat mapping, site assessments, and surveys for special-status species and other sensitive biological resources at numerous sites throughout northern California and the Central Valley.
  • Conduct worker environmental awareness training and biological monitoring.
  • Perform preliminary desktop analysis, prepare technical reports, and assist with other deliverables as needed.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.
  • A typical workday consists of an 8- to 12-hour day with a 30-minute lunch, two ten-minute breaks, and includes irregular hours (20-55 hours per week) and irregular starting and quitting times, in accordance with the requirements of the assigned job. It may also include weekend work, as needed. 
Minimum Qualifications 
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in botany, wildlife, biological sciences, environmental sciences, or a related field.
  • Must hold a valid Driver's License and have a clean DMV record and compliance with company safety protocols and procedures are required.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in conducting construction compliance monitoring, biological surveys, impact analyses, wetland delineations, environmental permitting and/or similar activities.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills and experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic abilities in identifying native and non-native plant and animal species.
Desired Qualifications 
  • Standard First Aid and CPR are preferred.
  • Experience conducting field surveys in the Sacramento Valley, San Joaquin Valley, Sierra Nevada foothills, and/or San Francisco Bay regions and completing associated documentation.
  • Experience with conducting surveys and monitoring for special-status species (e.g., giant garter snake, nesting birds, listed fish species, northwestern pond turtle, foothill yellow-legged frog, and/or California red-legged frog) is preferred.
  • Prior technical writing experience (e.g., annual biological reports) is preferred. Working knowledge of relevant environmental statutes and regulations (e.g., CEQA, NEPA, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, Fish and Game Code) and associated permits is preferred.
  • GPS/ArcGIS Field Maps experience is a plus.
  • Positive, flexible, team-oriented attitude, with the willingness and desire to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to work well independently and with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment.
  • Excellent and proactive communication with team members.
  • Basic computer experience including Microsoft Office software.
