We are seeking an experienced Senior Archaeologist or Senior Architectural Historian for full-time employment within our Cultural Resources practice.  This hybrid office role can be based in our Sacramento, Oakland, or Southern California offices. The position involves working closely with our team of archaeologists and architectural historians to pursue new project opportunities and successfully execute the work. This position will serve as a key team member working with scientists, project managers, engineers, planners, and other project staff across practices in the company. You will work collaboratively with clients and GEI’s other leaders and experts in the environmental, engineering, and water resources fields. Projects mainly involve water conveyance and storage infrastructure, groundwater recharge, water supply development, water and wastewater treatment, recycled water, ecosystem restoration, and energy and renewable energy development projects, with other types of project support opportunities in the U.S., such as electrical transmission lines and fiber optic cable deployments.
 
As part of our multidisciplinary project teams, you will have an important role winning, leading, and managing projects; interfacing with existing and new clients to ensure their environmental compliance needs are met; overseeing technical work and document preparation within your area of expertise; and working as part of our team to solve an array of water and environmental issues critical to California’s environmental, water, and energy landscape.
 
Essential Responsibilities & Duties 
  • Lead cultural staff in meeting the technical and financial aspects of projects, including development of field and office schedules and maintaining accountability for deadlines.
  • Assist with the administrative aspects of overseeing the cultural resources group, including supervision of staff.
  • Win, lead, plan, and manage contracts for cultural resources services on a variety of water resources, environmental resources, and energy projects throughout California and the U.S.
  • Serve as project manager and/or task leader and manage the technical, financial, and client relationship aspects of projects.
  • Oversee preparation of technical analyses and reports for Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, CEQA, NEPA, and other environmental documents to comply with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Identify, evaluate, and solve complex environmental and regulatory issues related to cultural resources management facing our clients.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level cultural resources staff and working closely with other senior-level archaeologists and architectural historians.
  • As part of integrated teams, work closely and collaboratively with other project environmental specialists, engineers, planners, project managers, and project directors to execute projects.
  • Maintain high visibility in the marketplace through regular client contact, participate and encourage active participation in professional organizations, and make presentations at client and industry events.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Serve as a role model for leadership, company culture, and values. 
Minimum Qualifications 
  • MA, MS, or Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Architectural History from an accredited college or university.
  • At least 10 to 15 years of relevant experience in cultural resources compliance with increasing responsibilities for winning, managing, and executing cultural resources projects in California.
  • Experience strategically planning, leading, and managing cultural resources projects, and preparing cultural resources documents.
  • Knowledge and strategic expertise identifying, evaluating, and solving cultural resources and regulatory issues related to water resources, environmental resources, and energy projects in California.
  • Strong reputation for high-quality work products and regulatory problem solving within the industry.
  • Seller-Doer with a successful track record in business development.
  • Experience strategically planning, leading, managing, and preparing proposals, statements of qualifications, and other marketing materials to obtain new work.
  • Outstanding problem-solving, organization, coordination, writing, people, and verbal communication skills; solid work ethic; and ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams. 
  • The job includes approximately 75 percent office/home office attendance and 25 percent in the field/traveling. This is negotiable based on candidate preferences.
