On-call Biological Compliance Monitor - Giant Garter Snake Experience Preferred

GEI Consultants is seeking multiple biological compliance monitors based out of our Rancho Cordova office to assist with compliance monitoring on a variety of projects in the greater Sacramento area. This position requires experience in biological compliance monitoring in the Sacramento Valley, specifically in conducting biological clearance surveys, compliance monitoring, and reporting. Projects will involve monitoring construction crews and conducting species-specific surveys. Experience with giant garter snake is preferred. Applicants should live within a one hour driving radius of Sacramento.
 
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
  • Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with mitigation/regulatory requirements. 
  • Write and maintain daily monitoring and inspection logs.
  • Understand permit conditions and other technical documents and implement onsite.
  • Effectively and proactively communicate with construction crews, project personnel, and agency staff.
  • Present worker environmental awareness trainings to crews of up to 40 personnel.
  • Conduct plant/wildlife/habitat reconnaissance-level field surveys, map biological resources, implement compliance with environmental regulations, and conduct report writing.
  • Occasional weekend work is required. Occasional overnight travel may be requested.
  • A typical workday consists of an 8- to 12-hour day with a 30-minute lunch, two ten-minute breaks, and includes irregular hours (20-55 hours per week) and irregular starting and quitting times, in accordance with the requirements of the assigned job.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in botany, wildlife, biological sciences, environmental sciences, or a related field.
  • At least two (2) years of experience conducting construction compliance monitoring.
  • At least two (2) years of experience conducting field surveys and/or compliance monitoring for at least one of the following species: giant garter snake, northwestern pond turtle, valley elderberry longhorn beetle, Swainson’s hawk, burrowing owl, and/or nesting birds.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying special-status wildlife species of the California Central Valley.
  • Basic understanding of state and federal laws regarding the protection of sensitive species.
  • Basic abilities in identifying general native and non-native plant and animal species.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills and experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Positive, flexible, team-oriented attitude, with the willingness and desire to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Must hold a valid Driver's License and have a clean DMV record. Compliance with company safety protocols and procedures are required. 
Desired Qualifications 
  • Standard First Aid and CPR are preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience being a CDFW and/or USFWS qualified biologist for California Central Valley species or previously approved by CDFW and/or USFWS for compliance monitoring work.
  • Experience working on infrastructure projects is a plus.
  • Experience conducting field surveys and/or compliance monitoring in the Sacramento Valley, but also San Joaquin Valley, Sierra Nevada foothills, Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, and/or San Francisco Bay regions, and completing associated documentation.
  • Experience conducting surveys and monitoring for listed fish species, foothill yellow-legged frog, and/or California red-legged frog.
  • Additional experience conducting impact analyses, wetland delineations, environmental permitting and/or similar activities is a plus.
  • Prior technical writing experience (e.g., survey results memos and annual biological reports) is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of relevant environmental statutes and regulations (e.g., CEQA, NEPA, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, Fish and Game Code) and associated permits is preferred.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Field Maps, CNDDB, and/or Wildnote is a plus.
  • Ability to work well independently and with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment.
  • Excellent and proactive communication with team members.
  • Basic computer experience including Microsoft Office software.
