GEI is looking for an on-call Architectural Historian who will work under the supervision of a Senior Architectural Historian/Historian and will assist with research, fieldwork, and report writing for architectural history projects.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties

  • Conduct architectural monitoring at construction site.
  • Conduct archival research at local, state, and regional repositories.
  • Participate in built environment surveys, evaluations for the National Register of Historic Places and/or California Register of Historical Resources, and mitigation.
  • Prepare cultural resources reports in support of Section 106 compliance.
  • Prepare CEQA and NEPA cultural resources sections.
  • This position has a field component; travel and some overnight travel are required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in History, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation, or closely related field, with coursework in American architectural history; or a bachelor's degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or closely related field plus one of the following: 1. At least two years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching in American architectural history or restoration architecture with an academic institution, historical organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution; or 2. Substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of American architectural history.
  • Two years of professional experience.
  • Working knowledge and experience with National Register of Historic Places eligibility recommendations as well as with other applicable state and local regulations.
  • Experience conducting primary and secondary research at repositories
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and experience independently preparing complex technical documents for various cultural resources projects.
  • Willingness and ability to follow directions, stay on task, and be mindful of project budget and schedule
  • Willingness and ability to travel on short-term assignments as needed.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field tasks.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.
