GEI has an excellent part-time career opportunity to serve as an Environmental Compliance Community Liaison on behalf of a client implementing an ongoing environmental remediation and restoration at a project site in Middleport, NY. The Environmental Compliance Community Liaison (Liaison) will coordinate community outreach, access, communications, and relations as needed to support the remediation programs. The role of the Liaison focuses on developing and implementing a community relations program designed to foster effective two-way communication and productive interactions with Middleport neighbors and local stakeholders. The Liaison will deliver external communications and community relations programming as directed that are consistent with our client’s position.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- Safeguarding the reputation of GEI’s client in Middleport as a quality corporate citizen
- Appropriately managing the expectations and understanding of the community regarding GEI’s client.
- Ensuring a proactive and responsive relationship with residents impacted by remediation efforts, including the ability to independently communicate technical details of remediation and restoration efforts to local residents.
- Continuing dialogs with the community to understand needs and concerns and working to assist in identifying appropriate
- Enhancing GEI’s client’s visibility and recognition in the community by operating a well-coordinated and executed plan of community activities through a team of cross-functional resources that serves the community and GEI’s client’s needs.
In this role, the Liaison develops and recommends community relations strategies and actions and ensures implementation to achieve the goals above. Identifies and strengthens or builds relationship with key local constituents (e.g., nonprofits, the local school district, business associations and local government leadership). The Liaison will work to identify strategic local and regional priorities through discussions with local leaders. As directed by GEI (and GEI’s client), with input from remediation and local plant leadership, the Liaison will create partnerships, avenues for employee engagement, and validate and measure the outcomes of programs funded.
Additional job responsibilities include:
- Resident outreach & distribution of public communication material including promotional give-a-ways and social events
- Community Advisory Panel (CAP) between the plant and the community as well as hosting “VIP/Stakeholder” meetings for the plant and offsite remediation
- Coordination of community and special interest group Plant Tours for select groups
- Development, maintenance and distribution of Community Connection Newsletter and client community website
- Collaboration with local Plant Manager, remediation/technical team, and Community Office personnel
- Communication database management, as needed
- Outline, compose and present written project summary documents based on information provided by the technical team using clear and concise writing.
- Ability to express ideas orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Support the GEI Project Manager with budgeting, forecasting, scope of work development, document tracking, staffing and scheduling.
- Support preparation of technical reports and presentations for delivery to clients and regulators
- Independently communicate details of remediation and restoration efforts to local residents.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree and equivalent experience from an accredited university in Communication, Environmental Sciences, Engineering or Geology related fields.
- 3+ years of previous professional experience in a community relations role; general familiarity with environmental regulations is desirable but not required.
- Strong conflict resolution skills
- Experience with Microsoft Office software
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license
