Position Overview:

The position of Shader Writer requires a good knowledge of rendering technology, including ray-tracing and path-tracing, ideally with several years of experience in a similar role.

The shader writer works as part of the render team to develop shaders and new rendering technologies for productions.

The candidate should have the ability to write complex shaders and the capacity to communicate complex technical ideas to the render supervisors and the artists.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work the the Render Architect and the Render Supervisors to design and write different aspects of the rendering pipeline, which would include writing shaders and tools to achieve the artists desired look in the most efficient and user friendly way.
  • Maintain the core rendering tools and shaders and help troubleshooting issues raised by artists.
  • Stay up to date on new rendering technology concepts, including the latest papers coming out of Siggraph and similar conferences.


  • 5+ years proven experience with physically based rendering
  • Experience implementing the latest Siggraph (or other conference) papers into production environments.
  • Familiar with core rendering architecture used in production renderers.
  • Good level in mathematics and/or physics
  • Good knowledge of C++, Python
  • Good Linux knowledge
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Team oriented personality with a proactive and positive attitude
  • Possess an eye for visual effects, including the rendering elements needed to produce different materials and FX.

Nice to have:

  • Experience in the VFX or feature animation industry
  • Master’s degree, or a PhD in computer science/graphics
  • Knowledge of other programming or scripting languages
  • Experience in implementing complex rendering solutions
