Position Summary

The Senior Manager of Engineering is responsible for building, developing and managing the US Turnkey Solutions group’s project design services team.  The role includes all planning, staffing, budgeting and people management of a new engineering team.  The position will act as a key advisor to strategic and tactical decisions, in both technology and project development endeavors.  The desired candidate must be a highly motivated self-starter who has the ability to initially individually contribute on engineering deliverables as well as build out a world class multi-functional engineering services team.

The position will be accountable for operational success, strategic alignment, and process integration with other major functional areas, particularly sales and construction.  The pre-sales team function will need to support both Utility (FOM) and Commercial (BTM) scale project development.  The team will also function as an engineering services provider to external channel partners.

Key Responsibilities 
  • Stand up a new core engineering team comprised of electrical, mechanical and civil engineers for designing and engineering primarily utility scale, code compliant solar generation plants.
  • Lead a team to perform technical due diligence and risk assessments of proposal solicitations to audit for suitability of Canadian Solar’s offerings, cost considerations, etc.
  • Work with sales and construction personnel to provide guidance on complexity of interconnection, feasibility, utility approval process, upgrade costs, and interconnection design.
  • Advise the Business Development team in understanding the engineering impacts of site specific or customer specific requirements of technical proposals. Conduct quarterly intercompany seminars to share the engineering knowledge with sales and product development personnel.
  • Manage the core engineering team to provide technical support for Turnkey Solutions proposal development including system layouts, single line diagrams, energy production modeling, and cost details.
  • Establish processes and tools to perform conceptual engineering design of both Utility and Commercial scale PV and PV+Storage systems, estimate project costs and develop pre- and post-sale project budgets.
  • Manage internal resources and, as needed, external subcontractors in the performance of multiple aspects of full project construction document design, including but not limited to integrated storage functions (hardware, software and controls), interconnection analysis and administration, structural & civil engineering, and electrical infrastructure upgrades.
  • Develop processes to hand-off the developed project (completed budget, completed design, technical requirements, and performance criteria) to project execution teams.
  • Develop standards of system design, testing and commissioning for external subcontractor compliance.
  • Establish performance analysis and risk management models to support system performance guarantees.
  • Drive the integration, development and use of a proprietary system monitoring platform designed for use on solar generation plants.
  • Delegate and manage project tasks to other team members as necessary to eliminate bottlenecks.
  • Stay current on State and Regional codes, standards, new solar technologies, jurisdictional & utility interconnection requirements, as well as installation best practices.
  • Mentor other team members to develop their individual technical skills.
  • Support project site visits, team meetings with internal & external partners, and customer calls & meetings / interviews as necessary.
  • Participate in completed project after-action reviews as a process improvement and data feedback loop.
  • Support and advise Product Development and Product Management functions in the assessment of new component manufacturing or acquisition
  • Provide weekly status reports to the Director, Business Development, Turnkey Services, Americas.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management or related field
  • Minimum 7 years of solar related experience, including at least 3 years of people management experience
  • Detailed understanding of energy generation simulation software applications, e.g. PVSyst and ability to guide the electrical engineering resources within the team to provide accurate simulation
  • Design and implementation experience with energy storage technologies, microgrid systems, and resilient operational systems is desired
  • Must have experience and understanding of National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), IEEE and UL Standards/Certifications related to PV / PV+S products, design and interconnection
  • Ability to adapt to strategic and tactical changes in a dynamic industry
  • Ability to communicate complex data and concepts effectively with both technical and non-technical individuals, while representing Canadian Solar with professionalism
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects, deliverables, and schedules in a fast-paced and dynamic environment

  • Position may work in an office environment in front of a computer monitor as well as remote setting.  Will involve sitting, standing, bending, crouching, reaching, may need to climb ladders, be outdoors during weather events, have full range of mobility in the upper and lower body, ability to perform light physical effort and work in uneven surfaces as needed for the job.
