Position at Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.

We are seeking an intern in our Optical Communications Laboratory in Yokohama, Japan. This internship will start from May 26, 2025, to August 1, 2025 (10 weeks). The intern will be working on measurement technology for advanced optical fibers. The intern will deliver an internal technical report on the establishment of a measurement setup for characterizing advanced optical fibers.   
Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Learn about the fundamentals of the measurement techniques/methods for advanced optical fibers through theoretical and/or experimental work.
  • Understand the advanced optical fiber measurement techniques and methods to be developed.
  • Set up and initiate a system for the advanced optical fiber measurement techniques/methods.
  • Validate the setup/system and confirm measurement accuracy.
  • May be asked to assist other team members with similar or other projects.
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited university seeking a BS or MS degree in physics or engineering.  
  • Intermediate level of knowledge on optics and optical fibers.
  • Experience in handling optical fibers is a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Ability to work in a PC environment.
  • Ability to communicate in Japanese is a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Good attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
