Weston Solutions is looking for an experienced Laboratory Manager to lead its molecular biology laboratory team. The laboratory performs gene specific quantification such as for example but not limited to pathogens, cyanotoxin genes, and microbial source tracking markers via qPCR and ddPCR in environmental matrices.  The Laboratory Manager is responsible for organizing and directing the daily activities of the laboratory to ensure client needs are met. This position requires leadership and teamwork to achieve company goals and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities:

  • Organizes and directs the daily activities of the laboratory to ensure adherence to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures
  • Ensures resources, including personnel are utilized efficiently and aligned with Company budget
  • Orders laboratory supplies and reagents and maintains adequate inventory
  • Evaluates and updates laboratory procedures and methodologies as necessary
  • Resolves day to day operational problems related to personnel and/or equipment performance; escalates issues to senior management when necessary
  • Prioritizes work during periods of increased workload, supply chain issues, equipment failures or staffing shortages; may perform the duties of subordinate employees as needed, such as any tasks required by the laboratory
  • Directly supervise, train, and mentor laboratory personnel
  • Interview and select candidates for open laboratory positions when needed
  • Supervises the training of new lab personnel and sets clear standards and expectations for the lab team
  • Meet regularly with direct reports to provide coaching and feedback for their development
  • Conducts performance appraisals in a timely manner and documents above or below standard performance, providing supporting documentation
  • Establishes and reviews general laboratory SOPs; Understands and follows company policies and procedures
  • Makes suggestions for improved work methods and ways to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and solve operational problems
  • Works with other offices and practices to plan for and accomplish organizational goals and objectives, and development and execution of organizational projects
  • Oversees the validations for new test methods, instrumentation, and reagents
  • Perform bench work as needed and maintain proficiency/competency in technical operations
  • Ensure all work is in accordance with the established quality procedures and state and Federal regulations (if applicable).
  • Shows detailed knowledge and skills regarding the work, keeps up to date and increases professional knowledge, keeps up to date with the latest developments in the field
  • Proactively develops plans to meet future departmental needs
  • Provides technical support to business development staff to facilitate proposal development
  • Provides technical support to existing clients as necessary to assist with data interpretation
  • Provides management with regular updates regarding project status
  • Attends external meetings representing Weston’s Molecular Biology Laboratory if needed.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Biological or Laboratory Science from an accredited institution
  • 2+ years of industry experience and 3+ years of people management experience preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of molecular biology theory and practice, including qPCR/ddPCR. Additional knowledge of eDNA procedures and next generation sequencing is a plus.
  • Expert knowledge of laboratory health and safety protocols. Knowledge of BSL-2 practices is preferred
  • Experience with experimental study design, data quality assessment and statistical data analysis is a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, video-conferencing software, and ability to learn instrument specific software quickly
  • Process-oriented mindset focused on continuous improvement, excellent problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment and excellent communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail, documentation skills and efficient time management

  • Ability to work flexible hours; including evenings and weekends as needed with reasonable notice.
