L2 Specialists are responsible for safely operating and evaluating self-driving vehicles in autonomous mode, providing ride-hail services to the public, supporting fleet maintenance, assisting with depot operations, and contributing to mapping and data collection efforts. Additionally, they play a key role in testing unreleased software, training peers and new hires, and supporting vehicle launches.
With a strong emphasis on safety and continuous improvement, L2 Operators are expected to demonstrate professionalism in all aspects of their role, including mentoring and assessing new team members. This position also offers opportunities for career growth, with a pathway to Team Lead roles within the L model.

Key Responsibilities:
Vehicle Operations & Safety
- Maintain Transdev’s high standard of safety inside and outside the vehicle.
- Operate an AV for 6-8 hours per day, up to 5 days per week (subject to change based on business needs).
- Drive in a variety of environmental conditions on both defined and undefined routes while ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
- Respond quickly to changing conditions and high-pressure environments as needed.
- Ensure the security of vehicle keys and disks, including proper handling, importing, and accounting at the beginning and end of each shift.
- Assist with the recovery of autonomous vehicles, including safe parking, disengagement, and relocation of the vehicle.
- Apply safety protocols in any scenario requiring intervention or rescue of an AV.
- Follow diagnostic guides to troubleshoot driver support modules, including mobile devices, laptops, and other work-related equipment.
- Perform utility work, including charging, vehicle preparation, and servicing, when not operating a vehicle.
Customer Interaction & Public Engagement
- Provide rides in autonomous vehicles to the general public while ensuring a safe and positive experience.
- Represent Transdev and the client by showcasing self-driving technology to guests in a friendly and professional manner.
- Engage with passengers, provide assistance as needed, and educate them on self-driving technology.
- Serve as a point of contact (POC) for client Security and Facilities teams regarding issues and repairs at remote sites.
- Ensure excellent customer service while assisting passengers in boarding, disembarking, and transitioning to a rescue vehicle if needed.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Work independently as well as in small groups (2-10 people) to execute operational tasks.
- Participate in continuous training to stay current on vehicle technology, operational procedures, and safety protocols.
- Adhere to assigned shifts and schedule changes as required.
- Role will likely evolve from more behind the wheel initially to more technical requirements to potential calibrate, dispatch and ensure maximum online time for the AV
- High mobility between markets is highly desirable as the technology matures
Required Education and Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience driving on public roads. Additional experience is preferred;
- High School Diploma or GED required. Four-year college degree (preferred) in a related field like industrial or applied sciences;
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
- Ability to parallel park with minimal assistance.
- Proficiency with a laptop computer and GSuite apps (i.e. Gmail, Hangouts, and Driver, including Sheets and Docs);
- Proficiency with using a touchscreen smartphone (Android preferred by not required); and
- Must be able to type at least 40 adjusted wpm.
- Must have good attention to detail and be able to quickly and concisely describe their thoughts;
- Capable of responding quickly and simultaneously to multiple scenarios;
- Adapt quickly to new and developing technology;
- Cross-functional verbal and written communication and issue escalation;
- Must be able to multitask multiple technologies, including communications devices and vehicle status systems;
- Must be able to work specific shifts, including early mornings, evenings, overnights and/or weekends, as well as travel for up to one month; occasionally may be required to work overtime and be recalled for peak operational demand.
- Must be able to perform your shift from a compact crossover vehicle; periodically exposed to the elements and outdoors
- Travel up to 20% of the time
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; and
- Must be self-motivated and demonstrate good judgment, in fast-paced, high stress environments
Physical Requirements:
- Routine and repetitive standing, walking, and long periods of sitting.
- Use of extremities to include hands/fingers/grip and; handle or feel; and talk or hear; climb stairs and/or ladders.
- May be routinely required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must be able to routinely and repetitively lift and/or move up to 45 pounds.
- Must use close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Most work is accomplished outdoors or in a vehicle.
- Work may require exposure to inclement weather and or extreme environments
- May need to operate alternative modes of transportation such as a bicycle or scooter
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Must be 21 years old;
- Does not have more than 1 point on the driving record (California), or one non-major moving violation in the preceding three years;
- Proficiency with a laptop computer and GSuite apps (i.e. Gmail, Hangouts, and Driver, including Sheets and Docs
- Has not had any driver’s license suspension or revocation based on driving or operating any
vehicle under the influence of alcohol or any drug in the past 10 years;
- Never been the at-fault driver of a motor vehicle involved in an accident that resulted in
injury or death of any person.
- Must have and maintain a driving record that meets state AVT (Autonomous Vehicle Tester) and/or other applicable regulations and laws; and
- Meets driver requirements, including driving record and criminal history under applicable regulations and laws in the state(s) in which the autonomous vehicle monitor will be working;
- All Transdev employees must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check. Safety Sensitive Positions will also be subject to a physical screening
- Transdev reserves the right to perform ongoing background checks for all employees except in states where this is prohibited by state law. Transdev will consider qualified applicants with criminal histories, consistent with legal requirements.
- Employees must maintain an acceptable Driving Record suitable to being approved to drive as part of their regular duties. Records are monitored on an ongoing or regular basis pursuant to local state law.
- Ability to qualify for an Autonomous Vehicle Tester (AVT) license in states and positions where it’s required
