Position at DNEG

DNEG is currently looking for senior Groom TDs for a 3-month contract. Groom TDs creates believable hair, fur, and feather grooms for characters and creatures on high-end VFX film projects. You will be a part of our Build department but will be working closely with Creature TDs regarding the requirements for their workflow. You will also work closely with the Modelling, Lookdev and CFX teams to ensure the best quality work is being produced at all times.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create highly detailed and realistic hair, groom, feathers for creature, digidouble and character of any kind
  • Improve department groom workflow and techniques by troubleshooting issues related to tools and pipeline
  • Interact and work with other related departments including Modelling, Lookdev and CFX.
  • Provide technical support and training to production teams as required
  • Participate in tools, pipeline and workflow meetings
  • Work collaboratively by taking and interpreting feedback in a timely qualitative manner
  • Maintain documentation for tools development and studio protocols
Must Haves
  • Proven production experience on high-end VFX feature films
  • Experience with proprietary or third-party grooming tools (Houdini preferred)
  • Experience of tool creation in Houdini
  • Eye for detail and a strong sense of logic and artistic direction
  • An appreciation of both the aesthetic and technical requirements of the role
  • Willingness to take ownership of your work and debug issues throughout the pipeline
  • Experience meeting deadlines while retaining a high quality of work
Nice to Have
  • A good knowledge of Linux
  • Familiarity with Windows
  • Strong proficiency in grooming software, such as Houdini, Yeti, XGen.
  • Python and/or Vex code writing knowledge
  • USD knowledge
  • At least 5 year of VFX experience modelling photorealistic characters for live action feature films or high end TV

Please note that this is a unionized position and will be covered by a collective agreement between DNEG and IATSE, in the coming months. As a unionized employee, you will be required to join the union and will benefit from the conditions set out in the collective agreement. Union dues will be required once the collective agreement is in place.


The base salary range for this full-time position is $92,000 to $138,000. DNEG salary ranges are determined by function, department, level and location. An individual's pay within a given range is determined by their transferrable or job-related skills and work experience. Salary ranges are modified from time to time based on external market data collected through our third-party surveys.
