Position at DNEG

The focus of the Look Development Technical Supervisor will be to seek out innovative solutions, streamlining user experience at a global level within the new pipeline at DNEG. 

Using your experience in developing workflows, the role will involve working with our different tech supervisors in the Build/Creature team & workflow architects to establish standard practices whilst supporting the creation of user tools that will be a real benefit to our global surfacing teams.

 

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with the Shot and Asset workflow team to test and develop user centric workflow tools  
  • Work with the surfacing team to establish and promote standardized workflows based on the new toolsets
  • Establish templated solutions to common assets like digital doubles 
  • Develop documentation to support new pipeline tools and workflows 
  • Communicate and collaborate with all DNEG locations
  • Promote a collaborative work environment while influencing morale, fostering discussion and a positive work ethic
  • You will guide the development of look-development components such as standardized shaders and materials, shader and material libraries or look development templates for various applications such as Mari, Substance, Maya, Houdini and Nuke
  • You will have the ability to acknowledge, diagnose and resolve issues throughout the production process and help the Look Dev team achieve artistic and production goals. 

Must Haves
  • Minimum 5 years supervisory or leadership position in a technical role
  • Expert knowledge of Houdini, Maya
  • Knowledge of texturing and painting packages (Mari, Substance, Mudbox) an asset
  • Strong technical understanding of shading in Renderman
  • Production experience with Renderman shading, lighting and lookdev workflows
  • Experience working in a Linux system environment 
  • Experience managing tool development in a production-focused environment
  • Familiarity with coding in Python
  • Real-world understanding of proportion, depth, scale, and physical space
  • Strong technical and creative problem-solving mindset.
  • Strong interest in real time software 
  • Ability to foster and evaluate new software packages and ways of working

 
Nice to Have

  • Hands-on software knowledge of key applications such as Mari, Substance, Photoshop, Maya, Houdini, Nuke.
  • Scripting and shader writing experience (Python, Lua, VEX, OSL, etc.)
  • Experience with rendering applications (Arnold, Solaris, Renderman, etc).
  • Experience using USD or developing USD workflows in a production environment.
  • Exceptional communication skills in dealing with both technical and artistic groups.
  • Ability to prototype rapidly and deliver quick solutions.
  • Previous work experience working in a fast-paced creative technology environment.

Please note that this is a unionized position and will be covered by a collective agreement between DNEG and IATSE, in the coming months. As a unionized employee, you will be required to join the union and will benefit from the conditions set out in the collective agreement. Union dues will be required once the collective agreement is in place.
 
 
The base salary range for this full-time position is $160,000 to $180,000. DNEG salary ranges are determined by function, department, level and location. An individual's pay within a given range is determined by their transferrable or job-related skills and work experience. Salary ranges are modified from time to time based on external market data collected through our third-party surveys.
