Echocardiographer
Description
Purpose: Responsible for using diagnostic medical equipment to diagnose various medical conditions overall mission. Population served based on scope of services in the department.
Essential Responsibilities
1. Review patient's medical history and physician's instructions. Ensure that there is an order for the test to be done. If patient is referred from a physician outside our practice, ensure a current script.
2. Prepare equipment for the procedure. Select patient from the modality work list. Select appropriate equipment settings. Confirm you have the correct patient by asking patient to state their name and date of birth. Explain the procedure to patient. Direct the patient to move into positions that will provide the best view.
3. Operate special equipment to direct non-ionizing, high frequency sound waves into areas of the patient's body. The equipment collects reflected echoes and forms an image that may be digitally stored and transmitted for interpretation and diagnosis by a physician.
4. During the scan, look for visual cues that contrast healthy areas with unhealthy ones. Follow the protocol for imaging and measurements required for the each study.
5. Prepare preliminary report in Fuji Synapse Cardiovascular for the physician. Before finalizing report, review to ensure demographic and report accuracy.
6. Assist with training new echo staff members.
7. Assist with coordinating measurement and text changes to GE units.
Education and Experience Requirements:
· High school diploma.
· Certificate in sonography from an accredited school
· Minimum two (2) years’ experience or registered through ARDMS or CCI
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:
· Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, instrumentation, basic physics, patient care, and medical ethics
· Knowledge of mathematics and science
· Knowledge of safety, infection control, and quality improvement practices
· Skill in gathering and analyzing patient data
· Ability to explain technical procedures to patients in user-friendly manner
· Ability to calm patients who may be nervous about the procedure
· Ability to use correct body mechanics to assist patients appropriately
· Knowledge of a variety of sonography equipment including ultrasound machines, transducers, gels, and computer hardware/software
License, Registration, or Certification Requirements:
· Certification of competency and registration through American Registry for Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer; Registered Vascular Technologist; Cardiovascular Credentialing International -Registered Cardiac Sonographer; or Registered Vascular Specialist. Any combination of the above.
