GEI Consultants is seeking a Regulatory Specialist and field lead to conduct project work in the ecological consulting and restoration management fields and transition into project management. This individual will work collaboratively with clients and GEI’s other leaders and experts in the environmental and engineering fields, primarily on ecological restoration and permitting for water, energy, and multi-benefit projects for private and public clients. The successful candidate should have experience planning and implementing all phases of environmental regulatory compliance programs for a variety of project types and scales.  As part of a multidisciplinary project team, this candidate will have an important role in collecting and analyzing field data; developing technical documents based on these data; preparing permit applications; and working as part of our dynamic team to solve an array of environmental issues critical to the environmental, water, and energy landscape. The position involves work on projects primarily throughout Colorado and the Midwest. The position will require travel for up to one consecutive week on multiple occasions throughout the year to assist in data and field collection. A minimum of seven years of environmental restoration, natural resources, mitigation, compliance, and/or permitting experience is required. This position is open for hybrid/remote work opportunities. This position’s responsibilities include the following:
 
Essential Responsibilities & Duties 
  • Develop environmental compliance strategies for projects that reflect a broad and comprehensive understanding of applicable federal, state, and local natural resource regulations; 
  • Remain apprised of changes to federal and state environmental regulations as well as economic trends;
  • Learn to manage technical, financial, and client relationship aspects on a variety of environmental projects;
  • Work with clients, resource agencies, and technical staff to prepare studies, evaluations, technical documents, and permit applications for all types and sizes of environmental projects related to water quality, ecology, restoration, and other relevant fields;
  • Organize and lead teams on aquatic resource delineations, stream statistics, vegetation and other forms of ecological performance standard monitoring, watershed assessments, fire mitigation strategies, and biological assessments in the field;
  • Serve as a technical leader, subject matter expert, or primary author on the development of technical documents and/or project compliance documentation;
  • Actively participate in multi-disciplinary teamwork, report development, and permit acquisition with biologists, planners, landscape architects, restoration ecologists, and engineers across the country;
  • Participate in proposal efforts, attend manager-approved conferences, and encourage active participation in professional organizations;
  • Contribute to strategic planning at the office, regional, and national level;
  • Occasionally work on construction sites and interact effectively with construction crews;
  • Having a commitment to safety (essential to this role);
  • Manage large sets of project data in an organized manner.
  • Overnight travel, sometimes for multiple consecutive nights, to assist in field data collection and/or training opportunities.
  • Other duties, as assigned. 
Minimum Qualifications 
  • Project management, team leadership, or willingness to learn project management and eventually lead teams
  • Experience with state and federal environmental laws in Colorado, specifically Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), as well as the 2008 Mitigation Rule and drafting the associated documents for compliance with these regulations.
  • BS/MS in environmental science, biology, natural resources, or similar.
  • At least 7 years of experience.
  • At least 3 years of consulting experience.
  • Experience leading wetland delineations, processing spatial data, preparing technical reports, and permit applications.
  • Knowledge of natural resource issues, policies, and trends around the U.S.
  • Experience with stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including providing clear direction and effectively communicating to teams.
  • Solid work ethic with the ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Direct experience completing functional assessments for wetlands and streams, such as the Stream Quantification Tool (SQT), and the FACWet highly preferred.
  • Experience with sensitive species preferred.
