GEI Consultants is seeking a Materials Testing and Inspection Co-op Student to support our materials testing and inspection team during a co-operative education work term. This role is well suited for students interested in gaining hands-on field experience in construction materials testing while working alongside experienced technicians, engineers, and project staff.
 
The successful candidate will primarily support field testing and inspection activities, with opportunities to gain exposure to laboratory testing, reporting, and coordination tasks depending on interest and performance. This position is based out of GEI’s Barrie or Guelph office, with fieldwork on construction projects across Central and Southern Ontario.
 
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
 
  • Perform routine field testing and inspection activities under the supervision of senior technicians and engineers, including:
  • Compaction testing of soils and granular materials.
  • Field testing and sampling of concrete.
  • Sampling of soils, granular materials, and asphalt for laboratory testing.
  • Attend construction sites to observe and document construction activities related to earthworks and materials placement.
  • Maintain clear field notes and assist with preparation of basic field reports.
  • Assist with laboratory testing in support of field activities, as required.
  • Become familiar with design drawings, project specifications, and applicable construction standards.
  • Communicate field observations with senior staff and project team members.
  • Follow project-specific health and safety plans and participate in site safety briefings.
  • With training and experience, work increasingly independently on assigned tasks. 
Minimum Qualifications
 
  • Enrolled in a Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, or related program at an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Eligible for a co-operative education work term (preferably 8 months; 4 months may be considered).
  • Interest in field-based work and learning construction materials testing practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle (business-use insurance required).
  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
