About the role
The position is an academic Lecturer position based on the Sydney campus and is responsible to the Indigenous Health and Medicine Domain Lead, Sydney and through them to the National Head of Medical Education and Innovation. You will work closely with the IHM Domain Lead, Sydney to support curriculum and assessment, develop and maintain community links and support our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students in the national MD program.
To perform this position, it is essential that the person be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is a genuine occupational qualification, under 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW), that applicants are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Applicants are requested to demonstrate their Indigenous heritage in addition to addressing the selection criteria.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with the IHM Domain Lead to build strong cultural capability within the National School to facilitate the maintenance of the School as a culturally safe place to work and learn for staff and students.
- Maintaining and growing the connections, networks, relationships and collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Work with the IHM Domain Lead to support the delivery, assessment, review and ongoing development of the Aboriginal Health curriculum on the Sydney campus.
- Support with the recruitment, retention and graduation of Aboriginal medical students and assisting with funding opportunities to support this.
- Participate in the management of Aboriginal medical student issues, wellbeing and access to wrap-around supports as needed, including liaison with the Foundation and Clinical Years teams, and Student Matters team.
- Maintain a record of high-quality achievement in teaching while contributing more broadly to curriculum innovation.
- Participate in significant internal and external grants to support teaching projects and initiatives
Qualifications, skills & experience
- Demonstrated experience working or teaching in the Aboriginal Health field.
- Medical qualification registrable with AHPRA and a Fellowship of a relevant professional body or significant progress towards an advanced qualifications and/or recognised significant experience in the relevant discipline area OR a PhD in a related field OR a Master’s degree with 5 years teaching experience in a tertiary education setting.
- In determining experience relative to qualifications, regard will be had to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, creative achievement, professional contributions and/or technical achievement.
- Knowledge of contemporary Aboriginal Health Curriculum.
- Knowledge of Aboriginal people, culture, history, and community and how health impacts on Aboriginal people.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team, assess priority of tasks, manage workload and meet deadlines in a busy education environment.
- Strong computer literacy with standard office programs and use of relevant digital technology.

Supporting documentation may include, but is not limited to, a letter of Aboriginality signed under the common seal from a recognised incorporated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community organisation such as Land Council or Elders group, Aboriginal Medical Service or a letter on letterhead from a Local Aboriginal Land Council demonstrating membership of the Council.
