About the role
The Laboratory Officer oversees the efficient operation of laboratory services by preparing and maintaining equipment, facilities, and resources while ensuring safety, organisation, and compliance with policies. Working collaboratively with academic and professional staff, the role supports teaching and research through technical assistance, troubleshooting, inventory management, and the continuous improvement of laboratory environments. This role will be responsible for multiple courses within Biomedical Sciences.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical support during practical sessions by assisting staff, researchers, and students, demonstrating correct equipment use, and troubleshooting equipment issues.
- Maintain laboratories by preparing spaces, managing inventory, keeping accurate resource and maintenance records, and ensuring all equipment is calibrated, safe, and operational.
- Support academic, research, and HDR activities by advising on equipment needs, overseeing small technical projects, and assisting with workshop or dissertation-related tasks.
- Ensure safety and compliance by maintaining documentation such as risk assessments, SOPs, and audit records, and implementing new safety procedures when required.
- Coordinate with internal teams and external agencies for equipment servicing, procurement, and delivery of laboratory materials using university financial systems.
- Collaborate effectively within the professional and academic staff to support teaching, research, curriculum delivery, and continuous improvement through active participation in team discussions.
Qualifications, skills & experience
- Relevant tertiary degree or a qualification such as an advanced diploma with at least 1 year of relevant experience, a diploma with 2 years of experience, a Certificate IV with extensive experience, a post-trades certificate with more than 2 years of experience as a technician, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proven laboratory experience, preferably in tertiary or higher education with strong knowledge of lab operations, equipment maintenance, safety protocols, and equipment demonstrations in learning environments.
- Demonstrated capability in maintaining equipment inventories, including servicing and upkeep.
- Strong operational, organisational, and administrative skills with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities and produce high‑quality documentation and reports.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for working with staff, students, and suppliers, supported by a record of preparing accurate technical documentation.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and high proficiency in software such as Microsoft Office and student administration systems, with the ability to learn and implement new systems.
