Position Overview:

The Legal Assistant will support the General Counsel of a defense contractor in all aspects of legal operations, compliance, and administrative duties. The role requires a proactive and organized individual with strong communication and multitasking abilities. The Legal Assistant will handle confidential and time-sensitive information, assist in contract management, regulatory filings, and complete other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administrative Support:
    • Prepare and process legal documents, correspondence, trainings, and presentations.
    • Organize and maintain digital  legal files.
    • Coordinate with external counsel and other departments within the company on behalf of the General Counsel.
  • Document Management:
    • Assist with drafting, reviewing, and proofreading contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
    • Track contract deadlines, renewals, and other key contractual obligations.
    • Maintain databases of legal documents and ensure timely filing of all relevant documents.
  • Compliance & Regulatory Support:
    • Monitor regulatory changes and ensure compliance with applicable laws, including defense industry regulations (ITAR, DFARS, FAR, etc.).
    • Assist in preparing and submitting regulatory filings, registrations, and renewals.
    • Help in gathering documentation for audits, inspections, and other compliance-related matters.
  • Corporate Governance:
    • Maintain corporate records and ensure timely updates of corporate governance documents.
  • Research & Analysis:
    • Conduct legal research on various topics as needed, including defense-related regulations, contract law, and government compliance.
    • Summarize and present findings to the General Counsel for consideration.
  • Communication & Coordination:
    • Serve as a point of contact between the legal department and other departments, vendors, and external legal counsel.
    • Manage communications related to legal inquiries, contract negotiations, and regulatory issues.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies, Paralegal Studies, or related field preferred.
  • Experience:
    • 3-5 years of experience as a legal assistant or paralegal, ideally in the government contracting industry.
    • Experience with defense industry regulations (e.g., ITAR, DFARS, FAR) is a plus.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and legal research tools.
    • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
    • Desire to learn and take on new challenges.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and work under pressure with strict deadlines.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Familiarity with contract management software or legal databases is advantageous.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Must be able to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
    • Knowledge of defense contracting laws, compliance regulations, and export controls is highly desirable.
    • U.S. Citizenship is required due to the nature of the defense industry.

Working Conditions:

  • Remote or in-office position based in Columbia, MD or Herndon, VA offices. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment with shifting priorities.
