This position is responsible for supporting projects within the corporate research and development group. Lead and support customer and MCC innovation and product development R&D activities while working in partnership with Strategic Marketing, Sales, and Operations. This includes managing the technical aspects of all projects assigned and seeking out answers by consulting others within the organization as needed. This position will participate with R&D group members to develop and commercialize innovative new opportunities across label technology platforms. This position has direct interactions with the senior leadership team and requires proven communication and influence skills to gain alignment throughout the organization

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead product development projects focused on the implementation of innovative premiumization, sustainability, and smart label packaging solutions.
  • Build a reputation for customer-focused creativity by delivering new ideas and decorating solutions
  • Envision, design, and bring to market new customer value propositions to provide competitive advantage
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects and coordinate resources needed to drive projects forward.
  • Use a StageGate project management approach throughout the new product development life-cycle from idea generation to commercialization
    • Participate in idea generation for new product development, mock-ups
    • With Marketing, conduct market assessment to assess commercial acceptance for new product ideas
    • Investigate new technologies and product concepts as possible solution options
    • Determine and define pilot phase trial order requirements, schedule & conduct internal printing & converting trials, and conduct benchmark laboratory testing
    • Initiate and direct testing and experimentation to verify results and decisions
    • Clarify and revise product specifications to meet customer requirements
    • Conduct scale-up from development to commercialization using a limited launch process
    • Document and communicate project status to ensure alignment and prioritization
  • Stay abreast of packaging trends and developments and drive investigations of new technologies to bring unique product concepts to the company. Interface with ink, adhesive, and material subject matter experts to internally and externally to satisfy specific project requirements.
  • Communicate, coordinate, and collaborate with all affected internal and external departments (customer service, pre-press, sales, and production) as needed.
  • Provide regular project status updates to R&D leaders.
  • Travel to vendors and customers to clarify data in resolution of R&D and manufacturing problems

Minimum B.S. Degree required. Area of study requiring use of scientific methods highly desirable, i.e. science/engineering, or technical major.

  • Industry background and/or strong understanding of inks, adhesives, coatings, solvent lamination, gravure and flexography printing, UV curable coatings, converting, die-cutting, film/substrates, labels/packaging and related materials desired.
  • Innovation mindset balanced with strategic and technical understanding of key business conditions.
  • Assertive communicator with keen sense of follow-up/follow through.
  • Ability to lead/manage multiple projects across a small team of technical professionals.
  • Self-starter possessing a strong sense of urgency and ability to prioritize and transition to new tasks
  • When necessary, manage competing priorities while dealing with volatility, uncertainty, and ambiguity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to relay technical information to non-technical industry colleagues both internal and external to the organization 
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office Suite
  • Position requires travel for both internal and customer visits and trials – overall travel will be as much as 30%.
