Senior Business Development Manager

King & Spalding, a leading global law firm with more than 1200 lawyers across 23 offices worldwide, seeks a driven and experienced professional to serve as the primary business development lead for the London office and manage BD colleagues across Europe and the Middle East. The position will work closely with the partners in this office, as well as with colleagues throughout the EMEA region and across the firm’s global Marketing Department, to help chart go-to-market strategy and drive a range of new business initiatives. The ideal candidate is forward-thinking, energetic and detail-oriented, brings substantive knowledge of the related practice areas and has at least eight years’ experience in a comparable role in London. 

REPORTS TO: 

Business Development Senior Director (Direct) / London Office Managing Partner (Indirect) 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

·       Work with London Office Managing Partner and other European-based partners to help craft and execute go-to-market strategies. 

·       Serve as BD point for Disputes-related pitches, proposals, events, client targeting and directory submissions in London.

·       Organize and drive client targeting program for supported areas, including prompting and monitoring pursuit activities, and tracking results and ROI.

·       Coordinate strategy and the development of materials for pitches, RFPs and other new business opportunities. 

·       Craft and update marketing materials for the office and related practices, including website content, brochures, lawyer biographies, at-a-glance documents, etc.

·       Identify and facilitate K&S participation in sponsorships, conferences, memberships and other key profile-building opportunities for the practices, office and individual lawyers in each.

·       Coordinate firm-hosted business development events (in partnership with the European Events Manager), including receptions, client entertainment outings, substantive presentations, webcasts, etc., working closely with participating lawyers and Marketing Dept. colleagues on invitation list-development, event materials, participant tracking, on-site management and targeted follow-up activities.

·       Provide matter content for legal directory, league ranking and award submissions for the office.

  • Oversee the upkeep and compilation of matter lists for the office and related practice areas.  

·       Oversee strategic research on potential clients, competitors and industry developments more broadly to identify business trends and opportunities and ensure that K&S is optimally positioned to grow market share.

·       Oversee the maintenance of office client and target contact lists.

·       Assist in the management of BD budgets: vet big-ticket requests by lawyers in the office and analyze BD expenses and effectiveness thereof.

·       Identify new opportunities for business growth and brand building for related practice areas and actively collaborate with BD colleagues to share and leverage such opportunities and best practices. 

·       Manage BD Managers in the Middle East, Germany, Paris and London. 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALITIES:

  • A strategic and proactive approach; ability to “own” and drive all BD initiatives for related practice areas. Flexibility and adaptability are particularly important for this role as we expect this office to grow and the needs to evolve.

  • A professional, yet approachable, demeanor, with comfort and competence both in dealing with senior lawyers and working collaboratively with other lawyers and staff throughout the firm. 
  • Excellent project management skills, with keen attention to detail and an ability to prioritize and execute multiple ongoing projects often under tight deadlines. 
  • Strong people management skills of both direct reports and other staff members who may be part of a project team. 
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Proficient PowerPoint, WORD, EXCEL and CRM. 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

  • Substantive background in business development within the London market and at least eight years’ experience in a business development role within a global law firm.
  • Undergraduate degree required – post-graduate degree preferred.
