Accreditation Canada is searching for physicians, surgeons, and registered nurses who are interested in becoming assessors for the Out-of-Hospital Premises (OHP) Inspection Program Pilot.
The OHP Inspection Program Pilot is a partnership between Accreditation Canada and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) that enhances patient safety by assessing the facility-level policy and operations supporting the delivery of services at surgical and medical centres where procedures are performed under various forms of anesthesia.
Services include:
- Eye surgeries
- Plastic surgeries
- Endoscopy
- Pain management
Assessors are experienced healthcare professionals who share our passion for quality improvement and people-centred care for all. They play a key role in conducting assessments of centre practices to ensure compliance with quality standards and facilitate continuous improvement. These dedicated health service professionals bring invaluable experience, knowledge, and insight to peer organizations.

Terms: Availability to participate in a minimum of four inspections per year. One inspection is equal to one day on site and 1 day of pre and post inspection document review. Additionally, travel time may be required. Inspections will be scheduled around assessors' availability and the needs of the OHP. Assessors will also participate in initial training and complete ongoing learning requirements.
Compensation: Assessors are paid professional fees for time spent on inspections and are reimbursed for travel expenses.

As assessors and champions of quality and safety, your responsibilities include:
- Conducting inspections as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. Utilizing policies, clinical guidelines, evidence-based practices, and personal clinical expertise to assess compliance against requirements. Reviewing policies, processes, and procedures, reviewing patient charts, and conducting interviews.
- Reporting and decision making. Collaborating with Accreditation Canada staff and advisors to obtain advice on inspections. Preparing comprehensive written reports using standardized templates, and offering opinions on policies, processes, and procedures.
You have a unique history. Does it include the abilities and experience listed below?
- Actively or recently engaged in the delivery of the services listed above in an acute care or private surgical/medical clinical setting.
- Valid professional license as a physician or nurse in a relevant provincial college and in good standing.
- As a surgeon or physician, experience in at least one of the following specialties: Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Endoscopy, Ophthalmology or Anesthesiology.
- As a registered nurse, a minimum of two years' experience in the specialties outlined above.
- Fluency in English and excellent communication skills, including strong writing skills and the ability to adapt communication style to the audience.
- Ability to analyze information and draw conclusions based on direct observation and document review.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to adapt to unexpected changes.
- Strong technological skills, including the ability to operate a tablet and use web-based software.

- Have experience working in a leadership role in the health care system in a clinical capacity.
- Have familiarity with the role of inspection in health care.
- Have knowledge of Accreditation Canada’s standards and processes.
- Have knowledge of Accreditation Canada’s people‐centered philosophy and how it translates into practice.
- Have experience working with others (e.g. patients, clinicians, or administrators) on quality improvement initiatives.
- For registered nurses:
Have a Canadian Nurses Association Perioperative CPN(C) Certification.
Are a member of the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC).
