Accreditation Canada is seeking experienced registered nurses, midwives, surgeons, and physicians to serve as assessors for the Integrated Community Health Services Centres (ICHSC) Quality Assurance Program. As an ICHSC assessor, you will conduct on-site assessments of community-based surgical and medical centres, helping to ensure that licensed services meet rigorous quality and safety standards.

The ICHSC Quality Assurance Program is a mandatory, inspection-based accreditation program in the Province of Ontario that enhances patient safety by assessing the facility-level policy and operations supporting the delivery of licensed services at a diagnostic, surgical and/or medical centre. Licensed services include:
 
  • Cataract and other eye surgeries
  • Plastic surgeries (OHIP insured)
  • Minimally invasive gynecological surgery
  • Abortion
  • Birth centres
  • Dialysis
  • Endoscopy

Who We Are Looking For
 
We invite applications from Canadian health care professionals (preference given to Ontario residents) who meet the following criteria:
 
  • Current Clinical Engagement: Actively or recently involved in delivering any of the licensed services listed above within an acute care or private surgical/medical clinical setting:
  • Valid Professional License: Registered nurse, midwife, surgeon, or physician in good standing with the relevant provincial regulatory college.
  • Specialty Experience:
    • As a surgeon or physician: experience in ≥1 of these specialties—Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Nephrology, Obstetrics (surgical), Gynecology (surgical), Orthopedics, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology.
    • As a registered nurse: ≥2 years’ clinical experience in one or more of the specialties listed above.
  • Communication & Analytical Skills:
    • Fluency in English with excellent written and verbal communication.
    • Ability to review policies, processes, and patient charts; analyze information; draw evidence-based conclusions.
  • Interpersonal & Technological Skills:
    • Outstanding interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a positive attitude when faced with unexpected changes.
    • Proficiency with computers, tablets and web-based software for report preparation and data collection.
 
Your Impact
 
As an ICHSC assessor, you will:
 
  • Conduct Inspections:
    • Join a multidisciplinary team to assess compliance with the standard using policies, clinical guidelines, evidence-informed practices, and personal clinical expertise.
    • Review documentation (policies, procedures, patient charts) and perform interviews with centre staff.
  • Report & Decision Making:
    • Collaborate with Accreditation Canada staff and expert advisors to clarify requirements and interpret findings.
    • Prepare comprehensive written reports using standardized templates, offering evidence-based opinions on policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Facilitate Continuous Improvement:
    • Identify gaps in compliance with Accreditation Canada’s standards and share recommendations for enhancing patient safety and service quality.
 
 
Key Details
  • Location: Ontario, Canada (Primarily Greater Toronto Area)
  • Time Commitment:
    • Minimum of two inspections per year.
    • Each inspection consists of two days on-site plus 0.5 days remotely, plus post-inspection report writing and travel time as needed.
    • Scheduling is coordinated around assessor availability and ICHSC needs.
  • Support & Training:
    • Initial assessor orientation program (self-directed learning modules and virtual classroom)
    • Ongoing learning requirements, webinars, and access to Accreditation Canada resources.
  • Compensation:
    • Professional fees for time spent on inspections (on-site and remote).
    • Full reimbursement of travel expenses per Accreditation Canada policy.
 
Preferred Qualifications
 
Candidates who stand out will possess one or more of the following:
 
  • Prior leadership experience in the health care system in a clinical capacity.
  • Familiarity with inspection-based accreditation, regulatory oversight, or quality assurance processes in health care.
  • Knowledge of Accreditation Canada’s standards and assessment methodology, particularly those related to surgical and procedural services.
  • Understanding of Accreditation Canada’s people-centred philosophy and its practical application in outpatient and surgical care settings.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on quality improvement initiatives.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities
  • For registered nurses: Certification in perioperative nursing through the Canadian Nurses Association (CPN(C)); active membership in the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC).
