Principal Engineer, Mechanical
Description
Enphase Energy is a global energy technology company and leading provider of solar, battery, and electric vehicle charging products. Founded in 2006, Enphase transformed the solar industry with our revolutionary microinverter technology, which turns sunlight into a safe, reliable, resilient, and scalable source of energy to power our lives. Today, the Enphase Energy System helps people make, use, save, and sell their own power. Enphase is also one of the fastest growing and innovative clean energy companies in the world, with approximately 80 million products installed across more than 160 countries.
We are building teams that are designing, developing, and manufacturing next-generation energy technologies and our work environment is fast-paced, fun and full of exciting new projects.
If you are passionate about advancing a more sustainable future, this is the perfect time to join Enphase!
Must be available to work on-site at our Bangalore office 5 days per week.
About the role:
As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the design and development of Enphase’s next-generation energy storage systems. This role requires deep expertise in electro‑mechanical design involving polymers, metals, rubbers, and complex assemblies that interface with PCBs and high‑power electrical components.
You will collaborate with global cross‑functional engineering, reliability, compliance, and operations teams, and your ability to communicate design intent, trade-offs, risks, and solutions clearly—both verbally and in writing—is essential.
In this role, you will drive new product development, with focus on reliability, cost and scalability of high‑volume energy‑storage products.
What you will do:
- Develop and own end-to-end mechanical architectures for new battery and energy storage products.
- Create mechanical design concepts, evaluate trade‑offs, and lead a team of mechanical contributors.
- Perform hands‑on CAD design (3D/2D), rapid design iterations, tolerance analysis, and detailed documentation.
- Lead DFMEA, DFA/DFM, and early design reviews to ensure manufacturability, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
- Component review and approval, including interfacing with vendors during different stages of development.
- Generating own (and reviewing others’) documentation, including concept proposals, analysis reports, component specifications, review minutes
- Design and execute comprehensive test plans (Inhouse and external lab) to verify mechanical performance against design specifications, including static and dynamic loading, fatigue testing, environmental testing, and reliability testing.
- Analyze test data, identify potential issues, and implement design improvements to address any deficiencies.
Who you are and what you bring:
- Bachelor's Degree (or higher qualification) in Mechanical Engineering
- 15+ years (with BE / BS) or 13+ years (with Masters) of industry work experience in product design & development.
- Proven experience independently designing electromechanical products; battery pack or energy‑storage design experience strongly preferred.
- Deep experience with plastics, sheet metal, die casting, and high‑volume manufacturing processes. Hands‑on experience with mechanical prototyping (3D printing, machining, soft tooling), mock-ups, and electro‑mechanical assemblies.
- Strong knowledge of UL/IEC standards such as UL 1741, UL 9540/9540A, IEC safety and IP/NEMA ingress protection requirements.
- Good exposure on prototyping techniques for design, development and verification. Hands on in preparing mechanical mock-ups, prototypes, electro-mechanical assemblies and cable assemblies.
- Strong understanding of thermal management, structural design, vibration, and fatigue considerations.
- Good Exposure on DFX for high volume production. In-depth knowledge and understanding of Design for Manufacture (DFM) of parts made through injection molding, sheet metal, stamping, milling/turning
- Expertise in SolidWorks & EPDM; experience with CAE/simulation tools (FEA, CFD) is a plus.
- Excellent communication skills with experience presenting to senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
