Function
As part of the Communications Team, the Senior Communications Officer leads the development and production of innovative multimedia products and explores new channels to expand the reach of Heifer’s communications work. S/he researches and delivers content linked to Heifer International’s work around the world to be pitched and used to secure coverage in media outlets in the United States and around the world and in Heifer’s World Ark magazine. The Senior Communications Officer also leads the production of issue and news-relevant content for Heifer’s blog, curating, editing, and commissioning content aimed at mass market and thought leadership audiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DELIVERABLES
A. Oversee production of multimedia content for use across Heifer’s communications channels (50%)

  • Lead and evolve the creation of multimedia content about Heifer’s work for pitching to media outlets and use within World Ark magazine
  • Agree on content themes and topics with Vice President of Communications in line with Heifer’s organizational priorities
  • Contract writers and photographers for production of content
  • Work with designers to plan visual strategies for feature stories
  • Lead concept development, content and copy editing and proofreading of all content
  • Collaborate with graphic designers and other team members to create first-rate print and digital collateral
  • Lead production of World Ark magazine print edition
  • Coordinate regular editorial meetings for World Ark magazine print edition
B. Develop compelling content related to thought leadership and policy issues in sustainable development linked to Heifer’s mission (30%)
  • Work with internal communications and public relations staff to identify story leads from across the organization and involve them in story development so as to develop content that can be pitched to media outlets and used for World Ark magazine
  • Collaborate with staff across the organization to understand and maximize coverage of Heifer’s work
  • Deliver regular commentary and stories related to Heifer’s work for publishing through blog and other channels
  • Regularly deliver content for World Ark magazine
C. Develop and explore new approaches for reaching core Heifer audiences and expanding to new audiences (15%)
  • Develop and test new approaches and products designed to maximize the reach of products and expand Heifer’s core audiences
  • Review and update brand and identify of Heifer blog and World Ark magazine
D. Other work-related duties, as assigned (5%)


Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree plus eight (8) years’ job-related experience.

Preferred Requirement

  1. Experience conducting interviews and research
  2. Experience working with foreign language translators and/or directing freelance photographers
  3. Proficient in Spanish

  1. Strong eye for a story and ability to cultivate relationships to deliver stories showcasing the active agency of project participants, protecting their dignity
  2. Knowledge of the international media landscape and experience delivering multimedia stories
  3. Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to demonstrate a diversity of writing skills
  4. Excellent organizational skills including strong attention to detail
  5. Knowledge of the non-profit sector and the context to which non-profit organizations operate
  6. Excellent English language skills
  7. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, database and email software (Microsoft Office Suite preferred)
  8. Understanding of and connection to Heifer’s core values
  9. Experience working on issues relating to small-scale farming, food security, economic development, women’s rights
  10. Commitment to social justice and equity
