Position Title: Sr. Engineering &Commissioning ManagerEnergy Storage

Department:   SSES Energy Solutions - Project Engineering

Reports To:      Managing Director, SSES - Energy Solutions

Location:         US based, preferably Southern California or Texas
                          Project Site ~ 50% (Southern California) and Remote ~50%

 

Position Overview:

The Sr. Engineering and Commissioning Manager leads a team of project engineers responsible for executing all the engineering activities of utility-scale Battery Storage projects. The candidate will organize and manage the team to work as a the key technical liaison with owner’s engineer and EPC partners during the design, construction and commissioning phases of the projects. Working closely with the product engineering team and suppliers, the candidate will plan the engineering activities and work through day-to-day issues. The candidate will need to travel to the project sites to support their team and kick-off key acclivities such as commissioning.

 

Responsibilities:

         Lead the engineering and commissioning activities of all BESS projects.
         Responsible for project commissioning execution and success. 
         Manage the day-to-day activities of the project engineering team (4 to 5 direct reports).
         Recruit employees and oversee their development.
         Develop plans and procedures for design review, quality inspection and commissioning tasks.
         Assign team members to specific projects and activities and organize the overall project engineering activities.
         Support procurement team in contracting activities with the review of schedules and cost estimates.
         Ensure engineering processes and tools are established and standardized.
         Ensure that proper documentation is established for engineering records.
         Develop and maintain relationships with engineering firms in active markets.
         Build, develop, and grow any business relationships vital to the success of the business unit.
         Hold weekly team meetings to encourage information sharing and keep staff informed.
         Coach, mentor, motivate and supervise engineering team members and contractors, and influence them to take positive action and accountability for their assigned work.
         Plan training and allocate training budget.
         Show leadership, resolves conflicts, and acts as a mediator .
         Provide reports to management as required.
         Hold the department accountable for all work and issues relating to professionalism and professional development.
         Ensure department resources are appropriately assigned to tasks.
         Kick-off all commissioning's activities on-site and train field team (Construction Manager and Project Engineer)
         Travel required up to 50% and the ability to stay on-site for two to three weeks at a time during commissioning activities.
 

Qualifications and Experience:

 

         Bachelor’s degree in related engineering discipline, preference given to post graduate degree in engineering
         Minimum 5 years’ direct technical experience from any of the following industries: Substation or Solar EPC, Engineering firm, Energy Storage integrator or similar.
         Minimum  2 years team management experience.
         Minimum 2 years of commissioning experience.
         Previous battery system experience is a plus.
         Deep knowledge in power system installation, construction, design phase engineering, local jurisdiction requirement, project scheduling, system layout design, SLD etc
         Thorough understanding and proficiency of local jurisdiction requirements, NFPA, NEC/UL code, Electrical Safety Regulation, IBC etc.
         Good technical writing skills and be able to draft working instructions, etc
         Exceptional ability to simplify and report complicated scenarios to management team, with outstanding judgment and decision-making abilities.
         Solid and effective interpersonal and communication skills (including oral, written and visual)
         Strong organizational and time management skills; the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
         Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally with staff, management, clients,  suppliers, community partners and external stakeholders.
         Demonstrated sound judgment and the ability to be decisive in crisis situations.
         Demonstrated independent thinking, initiative and creativity.
         Ability to work flexible hours (evenings, weekends) and travel to project sites as required.
