Description

Position at Consumer Tech

The Opportunity:
PCMag is looking for an experienced, curious, and enthusiastic writer to join our software reviews team, with a focus on Windows, competing desktop operating systems, and other industry-significant software services.

Our long-standing mission is to deliver thorough and insightful hands-on reviews and expert guidance. In this role, you’ll advance that mission by writing deep-dive features and thoughtful analysis and opinion pieces. You’ll also contribute with smart, independent software reviews, product roundups, and head-to-head comparisons that contextualize the development of major OSes and the software they run.

The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on testing skills with sharp editorial judgment—and a genuine interest in how Windows, other operating systems, and software bellwethers are evolving.

This position is ideal for a talented and driven writer and editor who wants to shape our ongoing Windows coverage and establish themselves as an authority in the space. This role reports to the Managing Editor of the Software Reviews team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Engage in detailed testing and comparison of software and services to write clear, definitive reviews, roundups, buying guides, features, tips, and news.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key vendors. Major plus if you already have those relationships.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends, proactively seek services for testing and coverage, and meet news and review embargoes.
  • Continually adjust that coverage to accommodate emerging areas of audience interest.
  • Maintain reviews, roundups, and evergreen content, keeping it up to date.
  • Contribute regularly to team and staff-wide meetings, pitching stories, collaborating, and ideating with team members.
  • Produce reviews and other stories in our content management system.
  • Verify and populate product specs and performance data.
  • Appear in social and long-form videos related to the beats you cover.
  • Represent PCMag at vendor meetings, industry events, and trade shows.

Job Qualifications:
  • 4 to 5 years of professional writing and editing experience at an established website, magazine, or newspaper. Experience with writing reviews is a major plus.
  • A demonstrable understanding of and interest in Windows, macOS, and Linux. You should be able to discuss key developments and trends in an insightful and concise manner.
  • The ability to write quickly, clearly, and economically is an absolute must, as is the ability to adhere to PCMag's style and editorial standards.
  • You must be a motivated self-starter who can independently prioritize projects and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. A strong work ethic and strict attention to detail are keys to success in this role.
  • You should be familiar with SEO/GEO and have an interest in audience analytics. Proficiency with these tools is a plus; willingness to learn is required.
  • You should be comfortable with online publishing platforms, product photography and videography, and digital image manipulation.
  • Our offices are located in New York City. We’re willing to consider applicants interested in remote working arrangements, but you must be able to work our core hours of 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. ET.
  • Applications will not be accepted without a cover letter. Please tell us what makes you the right candidate for this role.
