Rosenberg Institute Scholar Applications Welcome

The Rosenberg Institute for East Asian Studies at Suffolk University Boston welcomes applications from scholars who wish to be considered for a short-term appointment as a Rosenberg Institute Scholar.

This nonresidential appointment is for those who wish to complete a research paper or project on a topic of contemporary or current policy relevance that focuses on Greater China, Southeast Asia or South Asia. We especially encourage applicants who are willing to disseminate their scholarship to a broad audience, or engage in public scholarship across various platforms.

The Rosenberg Institute will select four scholars who will be appointed for the period of September 2022 to June 2024. This is a two year Rosenberg Scholar appointment with the expectation of one semester of “active” involvement with Suffolk University and the Institute. This is not a faculty appointment. During this time Scholars may be asked to present a lecture or talk at Suffolk via Zoom. If the Scholar is invited to visit the Suffolk campus to present in person, expenses for that visit will be paid by the Rosenberg Institute.

Each scholar will have an “active” appointment for one specific semester in that period. This is the period when the Scholar will prepare and submit an English language article or white paper that will be published on the Rosenberg Institute website. Scholars are encouraged to have this paper or project published elsewhere as well with acknowledgement made to the Rosenberg Institute Scholar appointment. This period continues to be a nonresidential appointment. An honorarium of $8,000 for this work will be paid one-half at the beginning of the active period, and the remaining half at the end of that period when the paper has been submitted and accepted.

Eligibility and Application Process

Preference will be given to applicants who hold a Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree in their field. We will consider applications from scholars at any stage in their career, but they should be a member of the faculty of an accredited degree-granting institution. We welcome and encourage candidates from groups underrepresented in the field of Asian Studies. This award requires the eligibility to work in the United States.  

Complete applications will include a letter of application from the candidate briefly stating the topic of their research and their wish to pursue the topic. Among application materials also include a full CV, one letter of reference, and a research or project topic proposal of no more than 800 words. Your research proposal should present the topic and its importance to contemporary policymaking; a hypothesis or thesis; proposed method of inquiry; possible ways to disseminate or raise awareness of the project; and a tentative schedule of writing about their project. In addition, the proposal should clearly indicate the applicant’s qualifications and ability to carry out the proposed project and other terms of this appointment.
