Provides leadership and direct management to meet the goals and objectives of the organization and service for the assigned unit as well as strategic collaboration with other Palomar Health stakeholders on hospital wide initiatives. Using a collaborative approach, assures mutual cooperation of the multidisciplinary team supporting the goals for the shared patient. Participates in interview and may independently make hiring decisions. Creates orientation plan in collaboration with Education Services and approves completion of unit orientation for new hires. Uses critical thinking in planning, priority-setting, and decision-making while ensuring positive working systems exist to support the staff's ability to meet patient needs. Responsible for rounding on direct reports and completing evaluations for assigned employee group. Participating in coaching/counseling of staffing including participation in disciplinary meetings and making decisions on terminations in partnership with Human Resources. Responsible for time and attendance review, approval, edits, and reporting. Has final approval of unit schedule. Completes patient and EOC rounds and provides prompt service recovery when indicated. May also investigate patient grievances or review findings provided by Assistant Nurse Manager for approve and provide final response. Investigates, remediates, and closes quality review reports. Investigates all employee accident reports. Reviews and analyzes quality and patient audit reports. Participates in committee meetings and trainings as required including meetings and projects with Medical Director, Med Safety, and Quality. Provides input on unit budget and regularly review department productivity. Is a role model inspiring others through displayed optimism, provides intellectual stimulation, and encourages follower creativity. Regularly participates in leadership development trainings. Ensures ongoing regulatory readiness of the staff and service, participating in chart reviews, monitoring and other performance improvement activities as assigned. Requires 24-hour accountability.

Emergency Department manager, in addition to above, will: Participate in the development and maintenance of a geriatric performance improvement program; Act as liaison with geriatric outpatient care partners including, but not limited to SNFs, Board and Care facilities, home health providers, etc.; Identify needs for staff education and implement educational programs when appropriate related to the geriatric population; Complete required hours of Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) approved continuing education units (CEU) every two years on geriatric topics offered by approved Geriatric Emergency Department (GED) accrediting body.

Speak and read English at a level that is sufficient to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the position. Knowledge of standard office equipment (i.e., calculator, fax, photocopier) and personal computer and computer software skills (i.e., MS Windows, Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint, internet, e-mail). Windows computer skills including proficient use of keyboarding, use of mouse or keys for functions such as selecting items, use of drop down menus, scroll bars, opening folders, copying and similar operations required upon employment or within the 1st two weeks of employment to perform the essential functions of the job. Performs other duties as assigned. Follows Palomar Health rules, policies, procedures, applicable laws and standards. Carries out the mission, vision, and quality commitment of Palomar Health.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education: BSN or Master's Degree in a healthcare related field (to also include MBA)
Preferred Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and Master's Degree in Nursing
Minimum Experience: 5 years related clinical experience including two years of experience in geriatrics (or in an ED that sees geriatric patients) within the previous five years5 years related clinical experience
Preferred Experience: 3 years progressive management experience with demonstrated understanding of quality improvement programs for their designated scope of responsibility.
Required Certification: American Heart Association recognized BLS - Healthcare Provider
Preferred Certification: Certification in specialty area of practice or role
Crisis Prevention (CPI)
Required License: Current CA RN License
