Vice President, Technology & Systems Strategy
Description
About MedVet
MedVet, founded in 1988, is a network of about 45 emergency and specialty veterinary hospitals for companion animals. Owned and led by veterinarians, MedVet is committed to delivering the highest quality and most compassionate veterinary care available in the nation. MedVet provides specialty referral services for in-depth care and patient management, as well as emergency services, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. MedVet's Technology organization is a strategic enabler of that mission — supporting clinical teams, enabling growth, and building the infrastructure for a best-in-class caregiver experience.
Position Overview
The Vice President, Technology & Systems Strategy is a senior leadership role within MedVet's Information Technology organization, reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer. This position serves as the strategic deputy to the CIO and the primary interface between IT and MedVet's healthcare, operations, and support service teams.
This is a dual-mandate role. The VP leads the Technology enterprise strategy, systems enablement, and transformation orchestration functions — ensuring that MedVet's hospitals, support functions, and leadership teams have a consistent, credible, and responsive Technology partner — while also owning IT's strategic planning, governance, capital, and portfolio oversight responsibilities. The role is designed for a leader who can operate with equal effectiveness in executive forums and in day-to-day stakeholder relationships.
This role includes three direct reports and their respective teams: Director, Digital & Innovation, Director, Technology Delivery, and Technology Partner Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise strategy, systems enablement, and transformation orchestration
- Lead alignment between MedVet’s strategic initiatives and operational goals with the roadmap and work occurring within the technology team to develop and transform systems and technology capabilities to support organizational growth and transformation
- Serve as a senior strategic partner to healthcare, operational and support service teams — helping translate organizational priorities into scalable technology and workflow strategies
- Partner with IT leadership to shape, prioritize, and sequence enterprise initiatives based on business impact, organizational readiness, resource capacity, and long-term strategic value
- Drive cross-functional coordination across technology, operations, support services, and organizational change efforts to ensure initiatives with complex and new technology are executed cohesively and deliver intended outcomes
- Establish governance and engagement models that strengthen collaboration between IT and MedVet leaders while ensuring clarity, accountability, and strong cross-functional communication
- Lead and evolve a team of strategic technology/business partners responsible for maintaining strong alignment across hospitals, support function, and enterprise initiatives
- Represent operational and stakeholder perspectives within enterprise planning, prioritization, investment, and transformation discussions
- Identify organizational friction points, dependency risks, and systems gaps early — coordinating with business and IT leaders to proactively address barriers to execution and adoption
- Help shape MedVet’s future-state systems strategy by aligning technology capabilities, workflows, and organizational processes to support scalability, caregiver experience, and operational excellence
IT Strategy & CIO Partnership
- Partner with the CIO on IT strategy development, multi-year roadmap planning, and organizational design
- Serve as the CIO's strategic deputy — representing IT in executive meetings, leadership forums, and cross-functional initiatives when the CIO is unavailable or needs parallel coverage
- Co-develop and maintain IT's strategic narrative for internal and external audiences, including board and executive presentations (we don’t know what a strategic narrative is; again, need to be clearer and more specific)
- Help the CIO identify emerging organizational challenges, synthesize input from across the IT leadership team, and pressure-test decisions before they are finalized
Governance & Portfolio Oversight
- Own IT's demand management and investment prioritization process — ensuring the portfolio reflects both business priorities and IT capacity realities
- Partner with the Director, Organizational Delivery to maintain portfolio health, track cross-functional dependencies, and surface delivery risks early
- Lead the annual IT planning and budgeting cycle, including both capital and expense, coordinating inputs from all IT directors and aligning outputs to MedVet's operational plan
- Design and maintain IT governance frameworks that are appropriately lightweight for MedVet's scale while providing the structure needed for accountability
Team & Organizational Leadership
- Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing team; build manager capability and succession depth within the function
- Model collaborative, transparent leadership within the IT director peer group — contributing to a healthy, aligned IT leadership culture
- Support the CIO in managing organizational change across the IT organization, including new capability development, restructuring, and change communication
Qualifications
Required
- 15+ years of progressive IT leadership experience, with at least 3 years in a VP-level role
- Demonstrated experience in enterprise strategy, systems enablement, and transformation orchestration, IT demand management, or stakeholder-facing IT leadership
- Track record of operating effectively at the executive level — communicating with, influencing, and building trust with senior business leaders
- Experience in IT strategic planning, portfolio governance, or technology investment management
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to translate technical context into business language and vice versa
- Proven ability to lead and develop teams in a maturing, fast-moving IT environment
Preferred
- Background in PMO, program management, or organizational delivery — comfort with portfolio visibility and governance frameworks
- Experience in healthcare, veterinary, or multi-site service organizations
- Familiarity with Microsoft 365, ERP (NetSuite), CRM (Salesforce), and HRIS (UKG Pro) ecosystems
- Experience building or formalizing a strategy function from the ground up
- Exposure to board-level technology reporting or executive IT communication
