Hood Industries, Inc. is a blend of wood manufacturing and distribution concerns that include two plywood and three lumber manufacturing plants, and twenty-four specialty wood product distribution operations, located in eighteen states serving the northeast, southeast and southwest United States.
Position Overview:
This position is responsible for providing direct supervision and leadership to team members to support the operations of a lumber mill.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain the highest standards with respect to safety at all times, leading by example and ensuring employees follow all policies, procedures, practices and regulations.
- Work with Mill Manager, Superintendent, and other supervisors to optimize productivity.
- Supervise operations to assure planned output at the highest practical efficiency.
- Foster a culture of open and respectful communication.
- Work with peers and supervisor to develop production schedules and budgets and to coordinate movement of material in and out of work area.
- Resolve operating, scheduling, and productions issues as needed.
- Manage and identify opportunities to improve productivity, reduce costs, and maximize the quality, value and recovery of lumber produced.
- Actively manage and reduce downtime through quick analysis of options and finding solutions.
- Supervise, train, direct and coordinate work and cross-training of the department’s crew.
- Engage production and maintenance workers to achieve targets, meet expectations and address deficiencies in a productive and professional manner.
- Ensure quality standards are met throughout the manufacturing process.
- Prepare required operating reports (e.g. work hours, production levels, quality testing, etc.).
- Assure that all machinery, equipment, and work areas are maintained properly. Work with Maintenance to coordinate preventive maintenance, expedite repairs, and schedule equipment updates, additions, and/or replacements.
- Provide ongoing coaching and mentoring to employees. Observe workers for potential future leadership potential.
- Maintain documentation for department operations, counseling notices, attendance, etc.
- Participate with interviews and selection of new hires.
Required Education/Experience:
- Post-Secondary Education preferred, but not required.
- Minimum of 1-2 years of supervisory experience.
- Knowledge and experience with lumber manufacturing and sawmill operations is preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills.
- Proven leadership abilities.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Desire to lead and support a talented team in a fast paced environment.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Excellent computer skills, particularly Microsoft Excel and Outlook.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities under demanding circumstances.
- Ability to think critically, analyze situations, and offer solutions.
- Must be willing to work flexible work schedules to be available nights, weekends, and after hours if necessary.
