Description

A lead contributor to the month end closing process preparing balance sheet reconciliations and supporting financial reporting requirements and various accounting related projects.  This role applies critical thinking to financial and other information with limited instruction and manages a high volume workload to meet monthly, quarterly and annual deadlines.  The Senior Accountant researches and resolves issues/questions related to reporting and reconciling accounting data and prepares financial reports and supporting schedules in compliance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and higher education industry practices.
 
Major Areas of Responsibility
  • Prepare monthly standard journal entries; prepare monthly reconciliation of various general ledger accounts; responsible for researching and processing corrective entries.
  • Reconcile cash activity to the general ledger on a monthly basis.
  • Review and reconcile all system payroll journals and make any necessary adjustments.
  • Responsible for review of payrolls prior to confirmation to ensure data integrity. Reconciliation of time reporting, employee tax and benefit withholdings conforming with federal and state regulations and guidelines.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual federal and state payroll tax filings including federal form 941 and multi-state payroll tax withholding and unemployment insurance reporting. Prepare and reconcile annual W2 forms. Responsible for state payroll registrations.
  • Prepare compensation reporting for the College’s 990 tax filing.
  • Prepare supporting work papers for the annual employee benefit plan audits.
  • Manage tax determination system used for international students, faculty, and visitors to ensure compliance with federal tax reporting requirements. Prepare annual forms 1042 and 1042s.
  • Account for and process Jesuit billing.
  • Cross-train with and provide backup support for other team members as assigned.  Serve as primary backup to process payroll during staff absences.
  • Manage PeopleSoft data feeds to the general ledger and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
  • Maintain PeopleSoft Finance security for end users.
  • Maintain the Controller’s Office website.
  • Assist with developing and documenting accounting procedures to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Assist with the College’s external financial statement audit.
  • Actively participate in special projects as assigned. Projects may include but are not limited to testing system implementations, upgrades, or enhancements, conducting financial analysis and developing ad hoc reports and process improvement initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Accounting and a minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience, preferably in a higher education environment.
  • Strong analytical and accounting skills and familiarity with GAAP, as well as an ability to grasp college policies and procedures.
  • Experience working with ERP (PeopleSoft preferred) and other SaaS systems.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel, with experience using other Microsoft applications.
