EPCOR’s People & Culture team is excited to welcome an experienced Disability Management Consultant (DMC) into a Full-Time Permanent role based in Edmonton, AB. This opportunity is well-suited to a disability management professional who brings strong judgment, clear communication, and experience navigating complex cases within a unionized environment.

 

As the Disability Management Consultant, you’ll actively manage nonoccupational short-term disability cases using a collaborative, evidence-based and employee-centered approach that meets individual health needs. You will adjudicate claims using the parameter5s of the self-insured disability plan. You will work within established policies, collective agreements, and best practices to assess needs, plan supports, and guide employees and leaders through the disability and return to work process. Your work will contribute to outcomes that are fair, timely, and sustainable for both employees and the organization.

 

This position is eligible for EPCOR’s hybrid work program.

 

 

What you’d be responsible for

 

Reporting to the Manager, Disability Management, you will have the following key accountabilities:

 

Program Planning & Delivery:

  • Contributing to Disability Management and Wellness plans and strategic direction, supporting sustainable, consistent disability management outcomes.
  • Managing work in alignment with bestpractice returntowork principles, delivering fair, timely, and wellreasoned decisions within established service standards.
  • Applying sound judgment to balance employee health needs with operational productivity and the financial stewardship of EPCOR’s benefit plans and resources.
  • Ensuring all documentation and communication consistently reflect EPCOR’s culture, values, and approach to employee care.
  • Identifying service gaps for continuous improvement, contributing to policy and program development, and strengthening its effectiveness and case management practices.
  • Integrating and applying Ability Management and Wellness processes, contributing to compliance with policies, standards, and regulatory requirements.

 

Disability Case Management & Return to Work Coordination

  • Adjudicating and determining eligibility for EPCOR’s in-house disability leave programs, ensuring decisions align with policy, collective agreements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Leading the development, implementation, and review of individualized rehabilitation and return to work plans, supporting safe, timely, and sustainable outcomes.
  • Coordinating modified duties and accommodation options in collaboration with employees, managers, unions, Human Resources, insurers, and WCB, navigating complex or nonsupport decisions with sound judgment.
  • Providing clear, timely, and service-oriented communication regarding processes, expectations, and claim decisions to all stakeholders.
  • Educating and coaching employees and leaders on their roles, responsibilities, and collaboration requirements throughout the duration of a case.
  • Applying sound judgment, conflict resolution, and coaching skills when navigating complex or nonsupport decisions, including identifying nonmedical barriers and connecting employees to appropriate support resources.

 

Workplace Attendance, Accommodation & Wellness Support

  • Delivering, coordinating, and providing consultation on workplace attendance programs and practices that support sustained participation at work.
  • Providing timely, practical advice, education, and coaching to employees, managers, and HR counterparts on employee health, wellness, attendance, disability, and accommodation programs.
  • Assessing accommodation needs and collaborating with employees, managers, unions, and other stakeholders to develop effective, sustainable workplace solutions that align with legal and policy requirements.
  • Supporting wellness, illness, and injury prevention efforts by connecting employees and leaders with appropriate rehabilitation resources and health promotion initiatives.
  • Using workforce and absence data (e.g., Oracle reporting) to inform decisions, identify trends, and strengthen attendance and wellness practices.

 

What’s required to be successful

 

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications, experience, and behaviours:

Education & Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree in Disability Management, Human Resources, Occupational Therapy (or related discipline).
  • National Institute of Disability Management and Research (NIDMAR) certification as either a Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) or a Certified Return To Work Coordinator (CRTWC) is required.
  • Candidates who are actively pursuing a designation, or who demonstrate a clear commitment to obtaining the required certification, may be considered with the expectation that certification will be achieved within 12 months of hire.
  • Support toward certification may be provided in accordance with EPCOR’s learning and development programs.

 

Experience:

  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience in disability program and case management, with responsibility for managing a broad range of disabling conditions, preferably in a multi-union environment.

 

Technical Competencies:

  • Knowledge of disability management systems and practices, including distinctions between occupational and nonoccupational programs, insured and noninsured plans, and the application of bestpractice accommodation and legislative requirements.
  • Understanding how addictionrelated and psychosocial disabilities can impact work ability, including considerations for psychologically safe workplaces and safetysensitive roles.
  • Familiarity with health promotion, rehabilitation, and recoveryoriented resources to support sustainable returntowork outcomes.
  • Working knowledge of HR programs, policies, and initiatives that support employee health, wellness, and disability management.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including SharePoint, to support documentation, reporting, and collaboration
